r/upholstery on Reddit: Reupholstering old recliner with piping
March 5, 2018 -

Hey all!

I'm fairly new to this sort of thing, however I will try to keep it simple and I welcome all helpful responses as I know you're all the experts on this.

I have an old wooden reclining chair (like this one) that has two cushions as well as an ottoman with an additional cushion. The chair and the cushion pattern is a bit dated, and I'd like to reupholster the chair and possibly refinish the wood. It's all in great condition, just not in great style.

My problem is that these cushions have piping. I am wondering if when I reupholster, is it necessary to add new piping, or can the job be done without? If so, how would that affect the cushions?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

October 26, 2017 - Be cognizant of where batting and foam pieces are – some of them need to be removed to get to where fabric was stapled in, and some (like in this picture) should be left along because there is nothing further to remove. Here is a tip: if you want your chair to be more comfortable, you can go ahead and add more batting or foam at this point.

April 22, 2025 - Up until this project, I had recovered a few dining seats, but I’d never actually reupholstered anything. The main difference being, I’d never made or used welt cord or double welt piping. My prior projects we’re as simple as unscrewing a chair seat, stapling fabric to the underside and then reattaching it with the four screws back to the chair frame.

April 5, 2022 - It's hard to see how this is attached to the chair or the type of fabric it is from the picture. I think it's a pleather material and if so there are repair kits you can buy on Amazon or wherever. They're probably 20-25 dollars and you mix to match a color and essentially paint it on.
