The seat back pad is held by the inner ring on the back of the frame. You would have to carefully prise this away,to free the pad. The seat pad is usually fixed underneath. Take off all the old fabric and use it as a template to cut the new pattern. Piping is usually tacked on last around the finished pad before you reassemble.if the seat and back pad fabric is really old,it may be held in place with upholstery nails. You can use a staple gun these days to do the same job. Answer from Rude-Possibility4682 on reddit.com

May 19, 2021 - Technically, I'm not 100% positive that these are "box corners" but that's the best descriptor I could come up with. When your seats are thick and square, it's so important to make the front of them look nice and neat. I despise puckering and if you don't sew pleats down the front, it's likely you will have puckering with your final product. To do this, I turned the fabric right-side down onto the cushion. I double checked that all sides would reach the bottom of the chair comfortably for staples.

So I cut out a piece, laid it out on the chair and started tucking and stapling...then realizing I had to start cutting...and well, my cuts were not on mark. They missed it by like two football fields. It was a complete fail. Then I remember watching Project Runway. Yes. This plays a part in reupholstering.

r/upholstery on Reddit: How to Upholster Dining Chair Backing?
March 11, 2023 -

I understand how to reupholster the seat part. That screws off and is easy. But how am I suppose to remove the backing part? I’ve tried and it seems glued on or something. Anyone have advice? There are zero videos on YouTube on how to deal with this type of backing on a Scandinavian dining chair.

I made an effort to remove some of the material on the backing to see what was holding it in place (that’s what you see in the pictures). I can’t find any screws or anything. I tried prying it loose with a screwdriver. It feels like it’s glued on real tight.

Update

I removed the padding from the top of chair and there’s no obvious way to remove the wood backing. I tried prying it away with screwdriver but it’s stuck on good. Should I just call it a day and bring in the professionals?

March 9, 2015 - You should now see where the fabric is stapled to the seat frame. These chairs had welting along the edges so first I pulled that off and then removed the seat fabric. For the welting, I was able to loosen a corner and just give a good hard tug to remove it. You’ll want to remove the fabric from one of the chairs carefully so you can use it as a pattern for your new fabric.
