The H in English (how to pronounce, silent H and more)
October 4, 2025 - For example: hair - air. hate - ate. hi - I. So for example, if your waiter at your favorite restaurant comes up to you and says, "Hey, did you try the new salad?" And you're like, "Oh, I ate it", then he'll think that you ate it already, but you actually meant to say that you hate it.

3 weeks ago - The letter is silent in a syllable rime, as in ah, ohm, dahlia, cheetah, and pooh-poohed, as well as in certain other words (mostly of French origin) such as hour, honest, herb, and vehicle (in American but not British English). Initial /h/ is often not pronounced in the weak form of some function words, including had, has, have, he, her, him, his, and in some varieties of English (including most regional dialects of England and Wales), it is often omitted in all words. It was formerly common for an rather than a to be used as the indefinite article before a word beginning with /h/ in an unstressed syllable, as in "an historian", but the use of a is now more usual.

First of all I'm not confused about how this letter is pronounced. I've been taught it's the former pronunciation all along and none of the dictionaries recognise the latter. But I observed there has been an increasing surge of people, many YouTubers included, that adopted the /heɪtʃ/ pronunciation, which vexed me to no end. I even saw some teachers of English pronounced the letter like that, which is alarming to say the least.

I pronounce it "aitch" but I think British people say "haitch"

I have never heard someone from the US pronounce it in the latter form, except as a joke over-Britishism. It is relatively common in the UK. Both seem to be usual forms, and I imagine you'd be understood most of the time with either as well. I'm not sure if you're joking or just being a little over formal, but to find a pronounciation "vexing" or "alarming" is a somewhat excessively strong response, I think.

'Haitch' or 'aitch'? How do you pronounce 'H'? - BBC News
October 28, 2010 - Because, while many are importations from America - schedule turning into skedule is almost certainly a consequence of American films and television - the gradual shift of garage to sound like garridge is less easy to explain. So too is there a mystery as to why certain pronunciations cause such strong feeling. Take the eighth letter of the alphabet, pronounce it haitch and then look for the slightly agonised look in some people's eyes. One suggestion is that it touches on a long anxiety in English over the letter aitch.

November 10, 2025 - In some cases, spelling pronunciation has introduced the sound /h/ into such words, as in humble, human, hotel and (for most speakers) historic. Spelling pronunciation has also added /h/ to the British English pronunciation of herb, /hɜːb/, while American English retains the older pronunciation /ərb/. Etymology may also serve as a motivation for H-addition, as in the words horrible, habit and harmony: these were borrowed into Middle English from French without an /h/ (orrible, abit, armonie), but as all three derive from Latin words with an /h/, they would later acquired an /h/ in English as an etymological "correction".
