Hi, It's my first Samsung Galaxy ever. I just finished the setup with Google Pay. But how do I pay, now actually? Do I have to press a button combination or something like that? Or is it enough to have NFC on and my device unlocked? And how do I choose to pay with Samsung Pay and Google Pay?

With Google pay you just leave NFC on and the phone unlocked and you can pay when you tap but it now requires you to unlock with a pin or biometric FPS. Samsung pay once set up you can choose to swipe up from the bottom of the screen which directs you to the S Pay app, even if the phone is off or at the lock screen.

Google Wallet. I have my wallet to open when I double tap the power button and you just tap to pay like normal.

Gpay is a place to configure cards and make it usable online but it's not usable for paying at the store. Use the wallet. And if you are beta testing one ui5 / Android 13, there's a good chance that one or more of your banks will say that your phone does not have the proper security and it won't work and you have to use Samsung pay.

I prefer Google Pay because all I have to do is unlock my phone without doing anything else. However about 1 in 10 stores I go to still lacks an NFC terminal. I have a Galaxy S20 Plus. I thought I could use both so I configured Samsung Pay but didn't make it the default app. But when I go to Fred Meyer in my area, which I know Google Pay (NFC) doesn't work on, I load the Samsung Pay app, select Pay and see the image of the card but can't get the terminal to accept it. I tried the same thing at another store.
Does anyone know if it actually works if Google Pay is the default app instead of Samsung Pay and if so, what might I be doing wrong? I believe I tried to put the phone close to the card slide reader, maybe I just didn't orient it right or maybe it's just not possible to use Samsung Pay without making it the default payment app?

I'm going from memory so I could be wrong. Go to settings>NFC. Choose Google Pay as your default. At the very bottom. Turn on Pay with currently open app. That will allow you to use Samsung Pay for MST and Google Pay for NFC without an issue.

On my phone, there is a setting where you can choose whether to use the app that is open or the default. If you activate that setting, then Samsung Pay will be used when it is open, and the default (Google Pay) will be used if neither is open.

Could I use Samung pay to pay with my phone at card readers but have Google wallet installed so I can I use the Google pay option on apps?

You can always use Google Pay with apps, as long as they're set up on Play Store payments. Google Wallet is just meant for physical payments. But if you're paying within an app, it should still work regardless of your default wallet.

Just use Google Pay as a default. Samsung pay has no clear advantage.
