The gross pay method refers to whether the gross pay is an annual amount or a per period amount. The annual amount is your gross pay for the whole year. Per period amount is your gross pay every payday. For example, if your annual salary were $52,000 and you are paid weekly, your annual amount is $52,000, and your per period amount is $1,000.

How does the federal tax withholding calculator work?
The federal tax withholding calculator, or W-4 calculator, helps you determine how much federal income tax should be withheld from your pay. It considers your filing status, income, dependents, and more to estimate your yearly tax and suggest W-4 allowances. Adjusting these allowances can influence your paycheck's tax withholding to closely match your actual tax liability. Remember, the federal withholding calculator is a helpful tool, but it's an estimate. Learn more about W-4s

How do I adjust my W-4 to get a refund at tax time?
It’s important to remember that getting a tax refund means you paid too much federal income to the IRS during the year, so you are owed money. If you are seeking a bigger refund come tax time, the simplest way is to update your W-4 to have more money withheld from your paycheck. The W-4 withholding calculator can help you determine how to adjust your withholdings. The less your take-home pay, the bigger your refund will be. However, it’s possible to maximize your paycheck amount and still get a tax refund. Learn how

You generally want to avoid owing more than $1,000 at the time of filing to avoid penalties or interest from the IRS. No. The W-4 calculator does not calculate your take-home pay. It only calculates the amount to withhold for your federal taxes and does not take into account state taxes or other items that may be withheld from your paycheck such as health insurance, retirement contributions, and more.

r/tax on Reddit: How do I calculate weekly taxes ACCURATELY??
April 13, 2024 -

I'm making an Excel spreadsheet to accurately calculate net pay.

One of my stumbling blocks is that my weekly withholding is on a 'sliding scale'. When I work a 40 hour week I have about 22.5% in withholding. If I work 17 - 20 hours of OT (57 - 60 hours) then withholding is around 24%. If I work 30 - 35 hours of OT (70 - 75 hours) then withholding is around 28.5%. I've tried searching for withholding percentages but all I can find is calculations for annual pay. I need something that gives me brackets for weekly pay. My hours vary wildly from week to week and I'm trying to budget expenses and savings. My state does not have an income tax so there is nothing to calculate there. I just need help with federal.

I don't know if this helps but my employer uses Intuit QuickBooks for payroll and on my W-4 I am under 200K with 0 dependents claimed (I think it's zero. It has been six years since I filled out a W-4.).

Thanks everybody!
