Think about what you love and hate about your kitchen today. Do you love having a utensil drawer but hate having a bin sitting out at the end of the worktop? Do you love lots of storage but hate the massive gaps between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling? Who cooks more, who cleans more? They should get a say in the relevant parts of the kitchen they use. What another comment said is good - make a list of how you use your kitchen if you're not sure. Also, be ready to compromise - sometimes the space we have won't give us everything we want. It's also going to be stressful - try to keep as level a head as you can. r/IKEA on Reddit: How should we prepare for our kitchen design appointment?
June 29, 2022 -

We’re having our kitchen measured by IKEA this coming week and we have an in-store design appointment the following week. Our kitchen is small and I don’t think there are many options for moving fridge/stove/etc around. We want to buy a shallow depth fridge to save some space, so that wouldn’t be IKEA. We also already have a new dishwasher. I figured we should bring the measurements for those appliances to the design appt. Anything else we should bring or should prep ahead of time to make the most of the appointment?

Step back and seriously evaluate how you use your kitchen. Do you chop a lot of vegetables or roll out pie crusts and cookie dough? How many place settings do you own? Are any nice enough to display? How many small electrics? Do you have a lot of leftover containers that need an organized home? How is your pantry storage fitting your current needs? The beauty and the curse of the Ikea Kitchen is that it can be whatever you want, so you have to actually figure out what you want. The designer will help you craft Ikea solutions to your needs, but they can't tell you what your needs are beyond the most basic concepts of a work triangle, landing zones on each side of a range, etc. If you don't even know where to start in evaluating your needs, keep a notebook for the next two weeks until your appointment and note what you do in the kitchen every time you enter it. (E.g. 10/2, 9:00, made coffee) That will help you honestly assess how you use your kitchen. Don't design a kitchen for the person you want to be; design it for who you are.

Walk in kitchen planning appointments in the US?
Make sure you have door hinges in your kitchen planning order! For some reason the program loaded everything correctly from our project except for 6 our of hinges. I didnt even think about doublechecking that when I went down the item list before placing the order! More on reddit.com

If your measurements are 100% good, and you understand fillers, cover panels, and the installation process (s. rail, feet), I’d say you’re well on your way, and which option you pick (online, in store) is more your choice than what’s best. More on reddit.com

r/IKEA on Reddit: Ordering Ikea Kitchen
October 19, 2023 -

We are about to pull the trigger on our IKEA kitchen. We have created the kitchen in the design tool, and are at the point of needing to verify the design with an IKEA professional and put the order in.

I've read that it is best to go to the store and order with someone from IKEA. The options for scheduling an appointment are In-Store Planning (90 minutes) Kitchen Consultation (30 minutes) or online Plan Verification (30 minutes). None of these options seem to fit with what what we need to do, which is verify the plan and place an order in store.

Has anyone had any experience with the in store planning options? If we schedule the 90 minute In Store Planning option will that person be able to verify the plan and place an order? Should we verify on-line, and make an instore appointment to place the order?

Thanks for any help.

Just had a virtual IKEA kitchen planning appointment--it worked well
IKEA's employee couldn't get into my plan link that I'd sent her. She told me they always try this first, but it frequently doesn't work. So, I ended up copying and pasting some of the images I'd created in my schematic from the planner. With all of these technology problems, my expectations were't too high. Our appointment was for 2 hours, and we used nearly every minute of it.
