New cheap Ikea modular kitchen cabinets, anyone dealt with them yet?
Well first...you need to edit the "cheap" out of your title and replace it with "inexpensive."
What your about to read needs me to legitimize myself. Im a 3rd generation tradesman with at least 12 years of school equalling 3 journeyman tickets. Im a Journeyman Painter, Journeyman Carpenter and a Journeyman Electrician.
Cabinet companies can go fuck right off. They are running an overpriced racket gouging the fuck out of customers. I will ONLY install Ikea cabinets. I use my background to properly trim them out to avoid ikea's plastic toekicks and overpriced gabels.
The boxes, hardware and doors are hands down better then industry standard AND backed by a 25 year garuntee. ..and thats from Ikea, not Joe's custom cabinets. "Building" takes far less time then me building a custom set and once the rail system is up, the install like a breeze.
To summarize... Fuck cabinet makers, IKEA is legit.
Edit: also everyone seems to think you hang the cabinets through the backerboard which is 1/8th shitboard. Thats not the case. Ikea created a rail system where all the cabinets are hung onto a hidden rail system. It's extremely secure.

I'm installing a kitchenette in the basement and considering getting the triple 72" cabinet and single 15" for the bottom and an assortment of cabinets for the top. I've yet to find any reputable review online or even non-stock photos. Has anyone dealt with them first-hand yet?

Being a cabinetmaker I'm concerned about a number of things:
thickness of fibreboard and whether its the same stuff as the 8*4 melamine sheets we use. We usually go with a minimum of 18mm which is roughly 3/4". If its lighter material I'd be concerned because it may not be as tough as actual melamine.
in our shop we use a solid, equal thickness piece of melamine for the backing of cabinets. Some contractors don't do this for cost reasons, but adding this backing makes the whole box stronger. It also looks nicer than seeing a wall when you open your cabinet doors.
It also appears the backing used in the cabinets is 1/4" material and it doesn't seem to me that it can support very much weight. This is especially important for cabinets that are hung instead of sitting on the floor. Screwing through 18mm melamine is a lot stronger than 1/4 whatever they're using.
Looking at the prices though, its tough to hire a pro to do this at those prices. But that's the trade off.
My cousin has one of the more expensive kitchens from ikea and to be honest its really nice. Cant complain. They use thinner materials but they also have fastening systems that are cool and do the job. When a CNC can pump out each piece exactly to spec, with more complex parts, at a lower cost, its tough to justify hiring a contractor. The toughest part is doing the install. If you're not familiar with the process and not handy then it can turn into a nightmare.
