Expanding the depth of the Besta 70" tV console
I may have just answered my own question - stumbled upon another blog with a similar besta hack here: https://homefixated.com/besta-built-in-ikea-hack/ In one step, he shows how he attached metal L brackets to extend the top of the cabinet using a piece of trim board. This makes me feel like there should be something for a screw to bite into in that area! I'm thinking this plan could come together. More on reddit.com

The problem you may have with the Brimmes is the open shelves are pretty much useless for any AVR other than perhaps the slim Marantz and to small for most center channels as well. If that is not a concern then it's a nicer option. More on reddit.com

I am designing a custom "media wall" for my basement using the Besta planning tool. So far I have found a configuration that I like and that fits my space well, but I am concerned about the depth of the main TV stand unit (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10299877/#/70299879). I have a few components that require at least 18" of depth (preferably more, maybe 20-22"... this depth would actually work nicely in my space). I'm OK with the shallower depth of the rest of the pieces but would like to make this piece deeper.
Would it be feasible to build a 3/4" x 6" frame out of 3/4" plywood, and then join it to the back of the Besta unit using pocket holes + pocket screws to extend the depth? I would most likely just leave the backer board off of the unit, and either fasten it onto the new extended back or just leave it off completely.
Two concerns / questions with this:
My understanding is that the besta units use a combination of plywood and honeycomb construction. Am I going to have issues attempting to fasten new wood onto the back of the unit?
Would removing the backer board cause a problem? I am thinking my new backing frame would make up for any strength lost by removing the backer board.
Obviously I would need to paint it to match (probably going with white), and deal with the inner shelves being shallower, but I think I can work around those issues.
Has anyone attempted something like this? Or would I be better off just having someone custom build this piece to the same dimensions? I like the idea of using the Besta if possible because then all of the accessories (doors, hinges, drawers, shelves) are guaranteed to fit without any fuss.

are you going to use just the open frame, or do you want the model with doors and drawers? Because with additional custom job that would be pretty unimpressive result, considering bang for the buck. The back piece is important in large wardrobes, but on this one not so much. I really can't read the imperial numbers, but since in metric it is 40cm deep and you want it to be 55cm, I would simply make a custom cover panels for sides and top, something like when they make fancy kallax credenza by putting plates of plywood on it. Cutting the besta frames is not a good idea. If you want to stick with besta, you can also build up from the regular cabinets where there are 40cm and 20cm frames, put it on legs and select one of those fancier doors and it may look quite nice. E.g. if you would choose the 40cm frame white and put it in back, the 20cm in black in front and also some dark /black doors it would look mighty robust :).

I have a custom configured 70” wide Besta, 26” tall, with a 77” LG C1 on it and it’s perfect. Middle compartment has a shelf halfway up, with my center channel on that shelf (angled slightly upward with some speaker wedges). Below is my AVR with plenty of room to breathe. Left and right sections have doors covering the bottom 2/3, with 2 shelves of blu rays behind. Top 1/3 of the left and right is left open for blu ray player, Apple TV, and controllers/remotes/etc. The TV is at a perfect height as well.
