10 of the Best Independent Magazines Right Now – PRINT Magazine
August 14, 2023 - Reading from the Vestoj site, “Vestoj ‘On Everyday Life’ is an exploration of routines, rituals and repetitions, the many ingenious ways in which the weak make use of the strong, how ‘common people’ reappropriate and subvert material culture to suit their own interests and rules, and a lyrical and critical exploration of generic, inexpensive and mass produced objects.” I can’t wait to get hold of it, and that’s one of the great things about these independent magazines – no matter how many you have on your shelves, there’s always another issue coming just around the corner.

I know that magazine printing is expensive, and that the extra overheads of distribution can also kill many small-time magazines.
With that said, does anyone here publish a small print "indie" magazine that's essentially a labour of love? Do you make any money at all? How do you manage it? What's your page-count and publishing frequency? How do you control overheads (including paying writers and distribution)?

I will be impressed if someone answers "yes" because what you're describing sounds like the Zine scene from back in the punk rock days. Often, the same people who would make the flyers for shows would also make little circulars using zerox machines, pastiche art and typewriters and exchange them through the mail. This was the Zine scene. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zine The PC pretty much put an end to this practice with its promise of "desktop publishing" and then even a web page because mailing paper by hand is very time consuming and costs money as well. That led to the "blog" which we still see quite prominently on the web. These later developments pretty much put an end to the independent zine scene. I understand you're asking about something more professional but unfortunately, I don't believe you're going to find much because there is no way to fund such an operation. Having said as much. . . somebody come along and prove me wrong. Leave a link to your content.

April 7, 2025 - Saraiva thinks of these magazines as vehicles for stylists, photographers, celebrities and writers to show off creativity in a way they might not be able to do in mainstream magazines. “It’s a lab,” he said. “It’s R&D for the creative industry. I see people taking pictures now that we shot 10 years ago. Not everyone is triple-checking to see if they’ve offended or please everyone.” · At first glance, independent magazines use a lot of the same celebrities that magazines owned by Hearst or Condé Nast work with.
