March 27, 2023 -

Hi all,

2024 is going to be the year where I help document my partner’s passion: gardening.

I want to go a step further and make aesthetically pleasing shorts for her that kind of look like it wasn’t shot by a complete noob.

One problem: I’m a complete noob lol.

Are there some basics tips you have that could help me?

I’m using an iPhone 13 Pro Max and for editing clips I’ve got Lumafusion on my silicon Macbook Pro. It’s probably not the best but that’s what I’m working with.

Even a short do’s and don’ts would help me out a ton. Like there are so many questions I have. Like should everything be shot in ProRES or is that a big no no?

She means a lot so I’d love to give her something more to smile at and keep her motivated and I’m sure this would.

Thanks!

Get the BlackMagic app for your phone. I’m pretty sure that it shoots in 4K and the quality is to die for. The files are big though, but because of that you can zoom in to 200% in your edit suite with no loss of detail. In fact I have found that the digital zoom on the phone isn’t all that (and I have a 14).

On the filming side of things, shoot plenty of wide/medium shots, THEN shoot close up. I edit professionally, and have lost count of the number of times I am presented with rolls of close ups, with no wides or ‘establishers’. It’s incredibly frustrating… Close ups are great, but you have to get a sense of where you are, what the person is doing, before you get into the sexy close up stuff.

If your partner is doing an action, try to get her to do it twice, wide and in close up, it makes it much easier to cut together.

That should get you started. There’s loads more but, because I don’t really know what you want to finish up with, I’m not really sure what else to add.

Oh, one more thing. Don’t shoot any single shot less than 30 seconds and, depending on the action, maybe longer. It sounds indulgent but it really isn’t - don’t shoot yourself short, lol!

Have fun!

EDIT: Whilst BlackMagic is great, it doesn’t automatically finish up in the ‘photos’ folder on your phone. You will need to transfer them out; I use the WeTransfer app to transfer them - you then send an email link to yourself and download them directly onto your laptop.

A Filmmaker's Review of the Apple iPhone 13 and Its Cinematic Mode | Fstoppers
September 28, 2021 - The positives are the Cinematic mode which allows you to change focus and aperture in post, ProRes video, and the f/1.6 fastest aperture to name a few. The negatives are the Cinematic mode taking finesse to make it look realistic, Cinematic mode only offering 30 fps, and a lot of unwanted artefacts for example. My opinion on the iPhone and its filmmaking capabilities is generally that it would be excellent for behind-the-scenes footage, perhaps some b-roll, and for an extreme run and gun setup, but it isn't in the league of dedicated cameras quite yet.

June 17, 2025 - The App store also has third-party camera applications, like FiLMiC Pro, which enable internal ProRes recording on the iPhone 13 and provides the sort of controls and other features which professional videographers demand. With a form factor that is easy to take with you everywhere, iPhone 13 is literally a pocket cinema camera. It may not replace all cameras all the time, but a filmmaking tool of this caliber has never been so accessible.
