If you (like me) are wondering if there would be much difference between the base 17 and pro versions in terms of main camera capabilities, here is what last year’s review said about iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16 pro main camera: “During daytime, both phones perform nearly identically. The iPhone 16 Pro has a slightly better sensor that captures more depth and low-light detail, but in average lighting, even trained eyes would struggle to tell the difference. That changes when it comes to people and dynamic range—where the Pro model shines with more nuanced lighting and background separation.”
iPhone 17 Pro Main Camera Sensor 'Smaller' Than iPhone 16 Pro Sensor
Smaller sensor with the same resolution means smaller pixel pitch. You probably won't notice on daylight shots but you might on night shots. They cut the pixel size in half on the 16 Pro ultra wide camera compared to the 15 Pro in order to increase it from 12 MP to 48 MP. That size difference is noticeable, but this change in sensor size would not be extreme as that. No matter how minor the change, smaller sensors is a change in the wrong direction. The physical size of the sensors and lenses in phones is the limiting factor in image quality and dynamic range which is why the software has to pick up so much of the slack. More on reddit.com

I hate how the iPhone may have some good camera specs but Apple’s tendency to heavily process images, especially human skin tone makes them look terrible. I have a Vivo X200 Pro that I use alongside my 16 and the iPhone’s camera output isn’t even on the same level as that thing. More on reddit.com

Is the iPhone 17 Air camera the same as the iPhone 17?
No. The iPhone 17 Air camera specs include only a single 48MP rear camera, while the regular iPhone 17 comes with a dual-camera system: a 48MP wide lens plus an upgraded ultra-wide. The Air still supports Night Mode, Smart HDR, and Dolby Vision video, but it lacks the flexibility of the iPhone 17’s two-lens setup.
In short, the Air offers a slimmer design but a simpler camera, while the iPhone 17 gives you more shooting options.

What are the iPhone 17 Pro vs Pro Max camera differences?
Both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature the same triple-lens system: 48MP wide, 48MP ultra-wide, and 48MP telephoto. The difference is in endurance—the Pro Max lasts longer on a single charge. In terms of iPhone 17 Pro Max camera features, both models include ProRAW, ProRes, Apple Log, 4K120fps, and LiDAR depth mapping.

r/iphone on Reddit: iPhone camera sensor size comparison
February 17, 2025 -
I stumbled across this chart comparing iPhone camera sensor sizes and it’s interesting to see how far we’ve come but also how backwards Apple has gone with the 16e.
A sensor the size of the iPhone XS with 4 times more but smaller pixels just seems wrong. And I know it’s a “budget” iPhone and that it does pixel binning, but it makes me wonder how Apple is relying way more on software rather than hardware here.
Anyone else thinking the same thing?
