If you (like me) are wondering if there would be much difference between the base 17 and pro versions in terms of main camera capabilities, here is what last year’s review said about iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16 pro main camera: “During daytime, both phones perform nearly identically. The iPhone 16 Pro has a slightly better sensor that captures more depth and low-light detail, but in average lighting, even trained eyes would struggle to tell the difference. That changes when it comes to people and dynamic range—where the Pro model shines with more nuanced lighting and background separation.”

I stumbled across this chart comparing iPhone camera sensor sizes and it’s interesting to see how far we’ve come but also how backwards Apple has gone with the 16e.
A sensor the size of the iPhone XS with 4 times more but smaller pixels just seems wrong. And I know it’s a “budget” iPhone and that it does pixel binning, but it makes me wonder how Apple is relying way more on software rather than hardware here.
Anyone else thinking the same thing?

I hate how the iPhone may have some good camera specs but Apple’s tendency to heavily process images, especially human skin tone makes them look terrible. I have a Vivo X200 Pro that I use alongside my 16 and the iPhone’s camera output isn’t even on the same level as that thing.

Is the main camera of iPhone air the same as iPhone 17 pro?
It looks the same but I’m not sure.
I know I don’t get the ultra wide (I don’t care), and not the same zoom level, but can I expect the same quality from the main camera?
Camera is super important for me, so if it’s better on the 17 pro, that will be my choice. Otherwise I’ll go for the wonderful Air.

The main camera of the 17 Air is 48 MP, f/1.6, 26mm (wide), 1/1.56", 1.0µm The main camera of the 17 Pro is 48 MP, f/1.6, 24mm (wide), 1/1.28", 1.22µm Both are the same resolution at up to 48MP, but most users still keep their cameras set to the default 24MP setting. You can shoot in ProRAW mode with the Pro camera but you can't with the Air. The view on the 17 Pro camera is a little bit wider than on the Air. Both offer a "2x" zoom option. The camera sensor on the 17 Pro is about 20% larger than the one in the Air, and each individual pixel on that sensor is about 20% bigger. This should help low light pictures look a little less noisy, and when the phone applies noise reduction to them, the pictures should look a little more natural because less processing had to be done to them. It should also help to capture a little more detail in your shots. Even though one is 20% bigger than the other, they are both still very small and the real world difference won't be night and day. You might be able to see some difference, but you will really have to go looking for it. You're not going to notice in casual viewing on a 6" screen. If I were making the choice based on camera alone, it would be because one of them only has one camera and the other has three.
