It feels backwards—12 noon is exactly halfway between midnights, but we call it PM. Wouldn’t it make more sense for 12 noon to be AM, since it’s before the second midnight?

AM stands for "ante meridiem", which means "before midday" and PM stands for "post meridiem", meaning "after midday."

Ante Meridiem, or AM, means "before the sun is at its midpoint in the sky". At noon, it IS at it's highest point, so it is no longer "before" that. Plus, just always used Midnight and Noon and there will never be confusion. As a software developer that often sets up overnight jobs, if something runs at "midnight", I set it for 12:01 AM. If it ends a midnight, I set it to end at 11:59 PM.
