I heard (dont care enough to check), that they're about a $2000 coat, which is fucking absurd, and are seen as an example of people burning money on something that is WAY overpriced when there are others in need. Personally, I dont care enough to check what they cost or if theres a good reason for them to be so expensive. But if they are that much, and they're purely a luxury item, then yeah, I can see the problem with families that buy them for their tween to show off. Answer from mayormcskeeze on reddit.com

I literally cannot fathom why anyone would buy anything from this terrible company. I get that not everyone is fully aware, but it has a literal entire animal on its hood for the sake of aesthetics. How does any rational person think it's okay to wear an entire animal around their face just for the hell of it? There are also so many down alternatives to this at this point, there are no excuses. Killing animals for flexing your money and status is not cute.

Anyways, that is all. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

r/vegan - Ethical dilemma regarding Canada Goose
August 6, 2013 -

So here's the deal, my uncle bought a Canada Goose jacket that was too small for him so he sent it over to my family. They decided that it'd fit me well so they held onto it for when I came back from school. I tried it on and it turns out it does fit really well and is very warm. I'm very conflicted right now because even though I'm currently only a dietary vegan I always try to buy vegan cosmetics and clothing, though too much of my clothing isn't vegan because as a student I get a lot of clothing as gifts and my family mostly ignores the fact that I'm trying to go full vegan.

The company's website states that all their down is a byproduct of the poultry industry, so at least these geese aren't being killed specifically for the garment/company. But I have read some articles about the company using steel traps to kill animals for their fur in the past. Either way the fur is out of the question for me because, as I see it, there's no reason to use real fur, though it's removable.

I guess the main issue of this is that I don't want to support what the company is doing as it seems that they're comfortable with their current practices. But since the jacket has already been bought I wouldn't be giving them money. However, I'm worried that I'd still be supporting them by wearing their product. My sister insists that no one gives a shit about what I wear since I'm not a celebrity, but I still don't really like the idea of making their product more popular. My dad's saying that I could cross out the logos and wear it as a statement against the brand so that the geese and coyotes didn't die in vain, that then at least someone wouldn't be wearing it to support the practices. But I'm worried that it will just make me a hypocrite. And of course my mother is outraged that I would even bring any of this up.

What do you guys think?

r/NoStupidQuestions on Reddit: Why do so many people hate Canada Goose with such a passion?
December 18, 2018 -

So recently I've heard a lot people getting really offended by anyone wearing a Canada Goose jacket. I'm not saying those people are right or wrong to feel that way, but I just want to know why. There are a few things I don't really understand which I'll mention below, and it would be nice if someone could explain it logically to me.

  1. I'd say the majority of people who aren't strictly vegan own something made using the product of an animal, or at the very least have bought something from a company that uses animal products in some of their things. For example big shoe manufacturers like Adidas, Nike, Vans, Timberland, Uggs and Converse (which probably make up the majority of the shoes I see people wearing these days) all sell shoes made of leather, which is obviously the skin of cows. A lot of people also have leather furniture in their homes.

I guess what I don't understand is why do people make such a big deal about Canada Goose using fur, and how this is different from using leather from an ethical point of view?

2) I hear a lot of people say that Canada Goose are cruel to their animals. I've seen pictures on Facebook of a pile of dead geese, saying that this is how Canada Goose treat their animals, and when someone famous is pictured wearing a Canada Goose jacket, the comments section is always full of people viciously attacking them for it, but the thing is I haven't seen a source for the pictures or the comments about cruelty.

I have read the Canada Goose website and according to them, they follow regulations and cause the coyotes the minimum amount pain possible. To me they seem to place more of an emphasis on doing it as humanely as possible than many other companies do.

I can understand that some people are against all forms of violence against animals, which is fine, but can someone explain to me why Canada Goose are so hated in this regard compared to other companies that use leather etc?

3) Another thing that I have read (I don't know for certain if it's true but maybe someone in Canada/USA can confirm), is that coyotes are being culled anyway to protect livestock and pets in some parts of North America. If they are going to be killed anyway, I'm not sure what the issue is here.

My gut feeling tells me it is just a case of people jumping on the 'anti-Canada Goose' bandwagon, because as far as I can see they are just one of many companies that use animal products, and they seem to get a disproportionate amount of hate for it.

Also to make it clear, I do like the design of their jackets, and maybe one day if I could afford it (probably not any time soon) I would buy one, unless someone can explain/prove to me how they are so cruel. I am totally open to having my opinion changed on this, but I'm not looking for emotional responses from people (e.g. instead of "they're a horrible cruel company" please explain to me what makes them more horrible and cruel than the rest).

Why is Canada Goose so hated, especially in Canada itself?

All these comments like "Only Asians wear this brand" or "Eddie Bauer has the same quality for much less money."

I don't get it.

I think you can‘t compare Eddie Bauer, Columbia or similar brands to Canada Goose but thats just my opinion.

Absolutely god-awful company ... Exactly, same here! It’s like, I know that faux fur is animal-friendly, but the fur industry just disgusts me so much that I don’t want my clothing to resemble it whatsoever.

Basically, their jackets use two animals; coyotes and goose.

Coyotes actually need to be killed because their ruin bio life and it’s actually why Canada encourages trapping to stop this.

For goose feathers, CG is partnered with food companies and actually takes the feathers from geese that have already died for food. Not live plucking which many people think, which I think that would be unethical for them to do.

So it’s really up to you. I’m from Canada so maybe my views are skewed because you’ll literally see 1/5 people during canada wearing one, but I can’t imagine them loosing their popularity. The company has been targeted from activists and in the news a lot for being “unethical” purely based of them killing animals and not the facts. (also don’t forgot, if you’re wanting a jacket that doesn’t have either, many other popular brands will do this so I’ll never understand why CG gets the most heat for it)

Also, just buy one used. You can easily buy a good condition used one for 40-60% off depending on model, size, and colour. This way, if you’re still unsure if you support their ethics, you’re not supporting them directly.

They’re good quality jackets and worth the price due to the warranty. They’ll last you decades.

If you’re looking for a good model to pick, I suggest the langford. it’s perfect for the city life as it’s not overly insulated and it’s slimmer

People in Chicago are getting robbed for these. So, based on your handle, you should 100% get one because nothing will give you more clout than a few gunshot wounds.

Between the insane price hikes year after year, the plunging quality — like jackets literally being stained by rain — and the legalistic bullshit they use to get out of any warranty support, I’ve had enough. I’ll love my old chilliwak bomber for as long as it lasts but will not be doing any more business with this sorry excuse for a company. Peace.

In the market for a good, vaguely military inspired parka. Something like this is exactly what I'm looking for. I love the chunky, four pocket layout, and purpose built aesthetic.

With all that said, I'm really not a fan of the obvious branding and status-symbol reputation that Canada Goose has. Ideally, there would be very minimal branding, or it would be from a name that isn't widely known as expensive.

Any under the radar recommendations?

I have a slight dilemma and I would really appreciate insight and respectful opinions from people.

Full disclosure: I am not vegan and I have chosen to support the use of animal products in clothing over their plastic/synthetic/vegan counterparts for reasons I don't plan on getting into here.

A Canada Goose jacket was passed on to me recently (through two people who did not use it). As stated above I don't have a huge issue with animal products in clothing as long as they are high quality, not "fast fashion" and going to last many years. I've done my best to buy the most responsible leather, wool etc that I can in the past.

I would not normally buy a Canada Goose (new material + $$$$$$) but I figured since it was not being used and would likely end up in a closet or eventually even a dumpster I would take it. I needed a good winter jacket (living in Canada) and didn't want to spend money on a new one as good jackets are tough to come across second hand.

While grocery shopping the other day I got essentially harassed verbally by someone telling me "I liked to kill for pleasure, etc, etc animal rights..!". I get really anxious and nervous when people speak aggressively towards me so I told them I didn't want to talk to them and walked away, unable to get across that I really think wearing this jacket is reducing waste and aligns with many of my zero waste values.

Maybe that's not a good enough reason for some people for me to wear fur? I would like to be able to defend myself should this happen again and I certainly don't plan on letting a perfectly good, extremely warm, high quality jacket with natural material go to waste. If activists are going to attack anyone wearing that type of jacket regardless of how it came to them (new or used) then the jacket will end up in the garbage i.e: WASTED

UGH. Anyways like I said, any RESPECTFUL opinions are appreciated. I know a lot of zero wasters are vegan so please spare me the animal rights speech, I heard it already from said grocery store person.

EDIT: TD;LR - I got a second hand Canada Goose jacket, got harassed for it but I believe it's zero waste and that's a more important thing. Thoughts?

May 6, 2021 - I think you may have a different POV if you’ve ever spent time in rural Canada. Coyote are pests, trapping is a decent source of income for some First Nations folks. But urban people say fur is bad, so Goose cuts it out and take the cost difference to the bottom line. I’m glad I got mine ten years ago with the fur. ... I don’t think you understood my comment. I am not against the use of fur or leather. I have leather boots. What I am against is cruel practices and trapping is a cruel practice. You can ethically source fur in ways that is up to date with current animal welfare practices.

My The North Face jacket is starting to show its age after 7 winters so I’m looking for a new winter jackets. I’m looking for something durable but stylish because I prefer to spend a bit more, but also use the jacket for longer.

In the stores around my area they have brands like Columbia, The North Face, Jack Wolfskin, and others but they feel like I’m wearing plastic bags. They also have Fjallraven which feels really durable, but I don’t like the design. Ski jackets are also probably very durable but they are too sporty.

I tried Ganada Goose MacMillan park in a different city and I fell in love with that jacket. The design, the quality and actually kept me warm. In the store was 1,250€ but I saw it on some retail websites for 6-800€

Do you think it’s justified to spend the equivalent of a used car on jacket and if yes is it really that durable? Other brands like Moncler and Stone Island have similar price range, but they don’t seem that durable imo.

If not what are some other brands that have the same characteristics, quality, style, durability, but are offered at a lower price point?

They’re such a desirable jacket in Canada. I know there’s some controversy with animal cruelty and all. What are your thoughts?

My friends tell me it’s a very durable and warm jacket, but I feel like you could find an animal-friendly + durable and warm jacket for a fraction of the price...

What are your guys’ thoughts on the jacket? Do you own one? Do you like it? Do you think it looks good? Should I purchase one or find another cheaper alternative?
