r/webflow on Reddit: How free is free?
June 23, 2024 -

Hi, I need to create (throw my crap into a template) a portfolio site and I know that Webflow offers free portfolio templates. But then I read that free only includes two site pages. I need a landing page that will show thumbnails (10-40 projects, I'm still editing down) of my past projects (proof of my work ability), but I also need all of those thumbnails to open so that they can be viewed, along with a small copy block that briefly describes each project when the thumbnail is opened. That's a lot more than two pages, right? And then the only other page I'll need is a simple About Me (resume) page. Anyone know how cheap I can build that site for with Webflow? Would you suggest a specific Webflow template for my needs that you've used?

Also, can I publish it/share it with others for free? I half wish it could stay mostly private too since it's my past work. I don't need it to be published to a large audience, I mainly need it to share with companies/recruiters when I apply for jobs. And because I'm out of work at the moment I have to watch my spend on this. Yes, it's an investment for my next job but times is tough right now, unfortunately. Thanks

Host it third party via bluehost or green geeks on Wordpress.org, then pick your favourite builder. It’s cheaper than webflow and you can use your own domain name. In the meantime, it’s worth a shot to set it up and apply with free webflow. I’ve seen junior level designers get jobs with a .webflow in their domain name (recently,) though granted - they had a ton of UX research experience. For senior designers or higher, probably wouldn’t be ideal. More on reddit.com

Has any UX/UI designer used to the free plan in Webflow for their portfolio and can it be done?
Yeah, I am also in a dilemma because the free plan allows you to create like 2 pages and I wonder how people create their portfolios considering a portfolio can have up to 3-5 pages More on reddit.com

I am frustrated by the webflow pricing
Hey Juma, I'm also Kenyan so here's the 3rd world game plan. First of all, everyones right. Use webflow for free and get your client to pay for your workspace. Also, Wordpress would be better for Kenyan clients but in case you want to stick to Webflow, here're a few tricks. Most employers and clients will want to see 3-4 examples so get 3 gmail accounts and make 3 webflow accounts. Each free account can allow up to two sites each so that's 6 sites at your disposal. Start learning on Webflow University with the free sites and get the fundamentals down. When you are feeling ready to start working on projects, make projects on the other accounts and leave the main one to hold your portfolio and a future client project. You'll realize that the free sites cannot go beyond 2 pages (eg you get just home and about unless you buy a plan) but you can get around this by cloning templates from an Agency called Finsweet that has around 8-9 pages. This may or may not make sense right now but it will come handy later. You can do some pretty cool work with just native webflow and no custom code on the free plan, I made this site on the free plan with the strategy above. 2.5 Make your portfolio website and link all those sites across your different accounts. Nobody can tell/cares 3. At some point, since Webflow cannot do everything, you will need to supplement with some custom code, so while you learn webflow I'd reccomend learning basic html, css and JS as well. I personally haven't heard python mentioned in the Webflow environment . I reccomend The Odin Project as it is what I currently use. In order to write code in Webflow you'll have to pay for a plan. Practice your custom code outside Webflow before you can pay for your webflow account/when looking for clients. 4. When you get your first client, depending on what you charge (I wouldn't go below Ksh 25k), use that money to pay for the workspace plan with 10 sites on your main webflow account (remember you had 3) for a month. *Build the client website first* and then pay for the workspace plan to export the site and host it somewhere cheaper. Most Kenyans wont be ok hosting on Webflow. Now that you have your workspace, use those 30 days to transfer all the projects from your other accounts into your paid account and add all the custom code you have been learning and want to show off, if any. Transfer all those sites back to your other accounts before your subscription is over as only two sites will be accessible after. 6. Rinse and repeat until you get a steady stream of clients to pay for your expensive webflow habit. Again, if you just want to just work with Kenyan clients I'd probably go for wordpress. It's the standard. Webflow would be more suitable if you wanted to work with international clients and agencies. Webflow will be more "work" and you have to game the system a few times in the beginning. Whatever you do, don't stagnate during your learning phase because you can't afford a plan at whatever time. Just find other things to do or a workaround and implement it when you can pay. More on reddit.com
