As someone who recently moved into a temporary space, I went with two twin mattresses for the storage capability. I sleep on them stacked (so it’s super cushy). Mine don’t have obvious edges (to the touch), and I have a separate duvet to cover them when they are laid side to side. We barely notice the edges while “active” on the king configuration. Most futons are filled tightly with cotton batting which means there's no 'give.' They're like sleeping on a carpeted floor but at least the floor is flat/level. Cotton filled futons will develop lumps from general use and especially from folding. If the cotton futon is filled tightly enough it is extremely difficult or near impossible to remove the lumps. A foam filled futon would be preferable. Both my sister and I had cotton filled futons and hated them to the point where they were headed for the trash. Then we each bought PREMIUM memory foam toppers which are 2.5 - 3 inches thick and simply lay on top of the futon. HEAVEN. All houseguests also report heavenly sleep. I write 'premium' because many products that call themselves memory foam are false claims. They're just ordinary foam. Check the reviews and be certain that you can return it easily. The cost of a cotton futon and memory foam topper will still be many hundreds of dollars less than most premium mattresses. Edit: that futon you linked to is cotton filled, as hard as the floor and will probably develop persistent lumps. More on reddit.com

I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room. Q: Was it cumbersome to roll up and store away or for airing it out / cleaning ?

Q: Was the seam between the two futons noticeable or uncomfortable when sleeping with a

For Either: Would you purchase this again ? Or what would you recommend ? 3" or 4" thickness ?
A little background:
I (31M) just moved into a new 1 bedroom apartment. I have moved many times and have come to despise mattresses due to their bulkyness, cost, and difficulty with reselling or disposing of them. I'm living alone but have a partner that lives separately in her own apartment and would like us to be comfortable when she stays the night.
TL:DR:
Seems like 2 twin XLs would be great for its modularity, but Im worried that the seam between the two futons would be uncomfortable. A king sized would be great and comfy, but I'm concerned that it will be difficult to roll / fold away, or hard to clean.

I have a king and wish we had gone with two twins. It’s nearly impossible for me to move on my own, I need my husbands help. It’s also hard to find a place to lift it to air out, because it’s so large and awkward. The way that ours is designed (cotton with wool fill from the futon shop), the seams are flat, flush against the edge. I don’t think there would be any issue with pushing two together.
