Hello, I'm trying to run Kali on my Macbook air m2, I understand that you can run it via VM but I like the idea of the portability that a USB boot gives you. All of the videos and writeups I find on the internet are for the old macbooks. Is it possible to boot from USB on the new ones?
What are the non obvious differences between booting from USB and using a VM?
Are there any other ways to run Kali on this laptop that I dont know about?

Right now, no, it’s not possible to usb boot it, and even once it becomes available, it won’t be as simple as plugging in a usb drive and telling it to boot from it due to the T2 and bootloader.

I am into penetration testing and I have M2 pro MacBook, I am wondering if I can run Kali along side MacOS on my laptop or I have to get a new laptop. Or if I run it as virtual machine would that be enough I am yet to start my study of pen testing relatively new to the subject so I wanna start on the right track. ... Bare metal is not currently supported at all, in Kali, on Apple Silicon. It runs just fine in a VM More on reddit.com

September 13, 2023 - The Asahi team just recently announced they are going to create an Apple Silicon Mac Linux distribution with app support which will be based on Fedora I believe. It will be some time before this will be available. Checking the Kali Linux website, it seems they have a limited ARM version and even mentions running in a VM.
