Kevin Costner had quite a run from 1987-1997
The constant shit this guy gets for his limited acting range, yes yes...we know.
At 34 years old, he had his rookie shot as director and took $15 million dollars, turned it into $450 million dollar film, got nominated for TWELVE academy awards (won 7) for Dances with Wolves. So like, yeah, its ok he's acted in mostly shit since the late 90s.

I've been on a Costner appreciation streak lately and never fully realized how hot this guy was in the late 80s and early 90s. Starting with The Untouchables in 1987, he was in almost nothing but commercial and/or critical hits for nearly a straight decade. He was in three Best Picture nominees in a row, and won for Dances with Wolves. Made two of the greatest baseball movies ever back-to-back, then made a classic golf movie a few years later. Mixed in with that were some critical duds that nevertheless were box office smashes.

Although some would say that Waterworld marked his fall from superstardom, I'd say that The Postman (1997) is what really downed his career for a time. He still made plenty of solid films after that, but no studio gave him that much creative control (and money) again. Even so, I'd love to see him direct something again...he hasn't done so since the terrific Open Range in 2003. It would be great to see him direct something in his wheelhouse like a western or another baseball-related film. Or maybe a baseball western???

I am the one person who really likes both Waterworld and The Postman.
