Think about what the kitchen will look like in your house and what you are drawn to. An ultramodern kitchen would have looked stupid in our house, so we picked more transitional finishes. If I posted, people here may say it’s already dated, but as long as you aren’t planning to move in the next couple years, you should pick finishes that YOU want to look at in the next few years. The next owner of the house will probably hate it and want to rip it out even if you somehow predict the future and pick finishes that are somehow in style now but won’t look dated in 10 years. r/kitchenremodel on Reddit: Suggestions to not build a dated Kitchen?
September 2, 2024 -
My husband and I are gutting our kitchen and meeting with the team on Saturday….problem is: I love everything! I never thought I’d get to pick out new cabinets and countertops. I feel comfortable with the functional elements, but I love every cabinet color and countertop and then want to go in a completely new direction the next day. I know we won’t do this again for a VERY long time, any suggestions on cabinet colors and countertops that will not look overly dated in just a few years?
TIA!

I suggest doing THE most basic handsome cabinet and counter AND tile. It's your canvas. I have a boring, plain off-white couch in every room basically. But I styled each room differently with art, pillows, coffee table, etc. When you have a really basic kitchen, you can completely change the vibe in 5 years. You might spend a little money on an electrician to do updated light fixtures, hang new art or get new chairs, but there's no demolishing. I feel like middle of the road, all the way, with nothing trendy or "new". But i would maybe print up 10 inspiration kitchens. Pin them up. See what vibe you like. Then post here and ask -- which of these elements will feel dated? So Basic, but great quality. I would go mid color wood. Not painted/colored. Nice off -white counter and backsplash.

7 Kitchen Cabinet and Countertop Trends Designers Never Want to See Again | The Kitchn
1 month ago - The thing about kitchen cabinets and countertops is that trends seem to come and go so quickly. Kitchen Cabinet Trends to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)
October 7, 2025 - Shiplap everywhere, mason jar lighting, and heavily distressed cabinets created kitchens that looked more like themed restaurants than personal spaces. This trend aged quickly because it was so specific and recognizable. What felt fresh and charming five years ago now looks dated and try-hard. The heavily themed approach also limits flexibility for future updates and changes in personal taste, a no-no when you’re designing for longevity. The key to avoiding outdated cabinet trends is choosing elements you genuinely love rather than following what’s trending.
