Having trouble with my Hustler zero turn.
About a months ago I hopped onto the mower and started it, and I noticed it was hard to start. The next week I went to use it and it wouldn’t start- just crank crank crank so it turns over but never actually fires up. So far I have changed the carburetor, including the fuel solenoid, spark plugs, fuel lines to the fuel pump fuel pump, fuel pump, oil, and gas. After changing fuel pump and hoses and carburetor, when trying to start, it does the same thing. Carburetor bowl fills up with gas just never starts even with starting fluid. I have messed with the auto choke by manually choking. Still, no luck. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

If it cranks and cranks, it's clearly (most likely) an electrical issue. Sounds you checked everything, but the one thing it probably is.... the magento. Did you try a spark plug tester to confirm the magneto is actually producing spark?

Will it start on starting fluid? Also check to make sure the fuel solenoid is working, you said new carb but could be wiring/electrical issue to the carb.

October 16, 2011 - Checked the schmatic and it is a fuel shut-off solenoid if I am looking at it correctly. I also removed the spark plug and it looks brand new so I sprayed a little WD40 in the cylinder and put the plug back in. It will crank all day but will not fire up. I could not find a reset button on the solenoid if it is stopping flow of gas to the carb.

If the engine can be persuaded to crank, it fires up and runs well. Sounds like it's in need of a valve adjustment, especially if turning the engine by hand (with the shroud off and spark plug wire removed) is overly difficult. Of course, this is assuming a good battery and starter. The engine should bounce back when spun and released against compression, but should be able to turn smoothly through all four strokes. May 17, 2014 - If you still have the hard starting (and still don't see that little dip of the rocker, you'll need to take the top of the engine off, and replace that camshaft. They use the same camshaft part number for both valves, so you may be able to just swap the cams with each other. If swapping, pay attention to the timing dots on the cam gears and crankshaft because there are dots for the cams being used in either location.

Try turning it by hand; if you can't remove the spark plug, be cautious as there may be a lot of gas if it's hydraulically locked. Ensure to avoid any sparks until you clean it up. Place a glove over the spark plug boot and check if it cranks over with the key. If it does, continue cranking until all the gas is expelled, then reinstall the spark plug and see if it starts.

I would be looking at the wires and ignition switch as the intermittent nature seems more like a loose wire than a coil/module/magneto that has windings opening up when hot or similar. I have an JD l130 -Kohler Command 23 with a no start issue. It's sputtered and came back a few times and then died.
It cranks healthily. Tried to bump it with some starter fluid and it didn't even try to start with that.
Pulled both spark plugs and they both Arc blue to the engine. Appears to have good compression. Ran like a champ before this.
I'm wondering if the coil could be bad but not fully failed?
Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

So you have 2 coils, so you'd think one of them should work. Flywheel key sheared?

Air spark and fuel. What's it not getting? Checked your air filter? How old is the fuel? What do the plugs look like? Black? White? Brand New? I thought the idea of the coil having enough to create a spark but maybe not a strong one, however you'd think it'd start on one and you wouldn't think both would be going like this at the same time. Try removing the spark plugs and rolling it over a few times with the key switch, as if you're starting it. Have a look for fuel coming out the spark plug holes. My last suggestion is to remove the carb bowl for a better inspection. If you find any gel type substance it's probably due for a freshen up at the least. You can try soaking it in an ultrasonic if you remove the entire carb. Best of luck!

I’ve got a miller welder with a Kohler here that turns over fine, has spark, new fuel lines, new fuel and oil filters along with a fresh change, new diaphragm pump and new carburetor but still no start. While it’s turning the engine will start to show some smoke from the exhaust but it can’t ever seem to kick over and start. We’ve put new gas in it, it’s getting fuel through its carb and has no blown fuses of any sort on the electrical end. Any ideas as to what could make it quit like this?
