Let’s look at 3 years of this. $1800 for the “plat” package. That’s 3 oil changes (only one per year) and (if needed) a “free” battery (theirs says $310, Costco says $109). And Kohler oil filters are $10ea and 2 qts of any full synthetic 5w30 works (last time I had a maintenance agreement they used Orielly oil and filters). I stocked up on oil/air filters plugs and oil (cause if it runs for 3-4 days during a storm you need another oil change and it’s not included in service. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Warranty should already extend beyond this 3 years, if not I think a 10 year is another $995? Priority service 🤷🏻‍♂️ if it’s during a storm, you will be dead and buried before they even call back. If you can do a 5-10 min oil change (change air/plugs while it’s draining) yourself and have a warranty, this is a waste of money IMO. More on reddit.com

I am an authorized dealer/tech for both Kohler and Generac. Kohler has more than their fair share of issues. A big point that I dislike about them is their OnCue system. When it works it is fine, but they are dodgy and Kohler likes to update their servers without telling anybody causing issues in the field. It also isn't wifi enabled (they sell wifi modules but that's another part to break) meaning software updates have to be done via USB or their Sitetech software. I have also noticed the QC of them recently declining. Parts missing from the factory, wiring mislabeled, no oil, hot/ground reversed for a battery charging circuit. I swap more RDC2 controllers than I do Evolution controllers. Now, having said all that, the Kohler's aesthetically are much more pleasing. The engines are higher quality, which is important down the line for the life of the unit. They are even offering custom colors on their units soon. Generacs are easier to install and maintain (IMO) but as stated by you and the comment above, there are rising concerns in QC and customer service can be a pain if you don't have an authorized dealer/service provider to act as an intermediary. I have had to deal with more maintenance and servicing on Generac engines rather than the electrical components. Both have about the same quality ATX, Kohler being the nicer looking one. You can do just about the same with each. Exception being Generac's SMM which is neat but I find they happen to always go out right after their warranty expires. Having said all that, if your installation is done by certified technicians, including a plumber who has their wits about them on the gas portion and you maintain the generator at the proper service intervals, both will treat you right. I’m in Texas, haven’t heard of any discounts, ever. Especially those numbers. There have been some mfgr rebates and additional warranties, etc but dealers are usually MSRP or more on equipment and if you are lucky $10-13,000 for install. Good luck! More on reddit.com

You are basically paying for the travel. It's not unlike a $39 oil change at a quick lube place (plus a couple of spark plugs) but the tech has to come to you so now it's $300. If you are handy (comfortable working around small engines) there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the service yourself. There are plenty of videos on how to do that kind of stuff. Even checking the valve clearance is not that hard if you are not easily intimidated. But some people are not handy or scared of working around mechanical stuff.
