They don’t make a lot of cameras -> higher production costs per camera They are manufactured in Germany -> more expensive manufacturing costs The quality control and built quality is in the highest standard. You get only the copies sold, that are nearly perfect in all technical aspects. It’s crazy how much glass they order from Schott in Mainz and how less they actually use. Then there are still patents they have. Rangefinder cameras are quite complex cameras. And well, it’s currently the only real 35mm in production on the market. But I don’t think, if Nikon would bring a remake of the F2 or F in the way it was built back then plus a modern light meter, they’d surely charge over 2500€ for it, if not more. Oh and another point. Service. Drive to Wetzlar, give them your 80 years old camera and they will fix it (only some exceptions where they don’t have the parts anymore). Now try that with Nikon e. g. (And I’m also a fan of the Nikons, I don’t want to trash talk them) A friend of mine had a problem with the electronics with his M10P, long after the warranty, they fixed it. It would normally cost over 1000€ and they did it for free, because that shouldn’t be happening. They didn’t have to repair it for free. The general Leica experience is overwhelming. Leica Film Photography. Cameras & Guides: Leica Camera US
In the case of a photo on film, the result is always an original. Unique and exclusive, with an aura that none can resist and that cannot be precisely reproduced digitally. ... Leica is one of very few manufacturers today to still produce cameras for both digital and film photography.

Voigtlander R3A - Starter M-Mount Film Cameras

i cant recommend the Voigtlander R series enough. they are the perfect way to get into the rangefinder world. Dont rule out the R4 either. its a fantastic camera.

I used an R4M for many years before selling it and purchasing a leica, and I truly wish I had kept it. I don't regret going leica, and eventually, you probably wont either. But man, sometimes i really wish i could shoot my R4M again.

Two things to consider when buying an R.

(1) what frame lines do you use the most often. R2 and R3 have very moderate focal lengths. R4 has a much wider viewfinder and frame lines. If you like shooting 21mm-50mm lenses, this viewfinder covers you.

(2) are you completely tied to having Aperture Priority? if you dont absolutely NEED aperture priority, I would seriously consider getting an R_M (R2m, R3m, R4m). There is no exposure automation in these, but there is a continously working light meter. You can still get light readings in the viewfinder, but if the batteries die, your camera will continue to work.

r/photography on Reddit: What’s really the difference between a Leica film camera and any other film camera?
November 1, 2023 -

I just tried to do some research on the background of Leica to try and find out why people spend $5k+ on a 35mm film camera. If you put two photos from the same type of film next to each other, one taken on a Leica and one on say my Nikon fg, I literally could not tell you the difference. With film cameras, the film essentially is your sensor. I totally get Leica digital cameras but their 35mm cameras being so expensive just doesn’t make sense to me. I’m curious to see why any of y’all bought yours and how you justified that purchase and what differences you’ve noticed.

Originally, build quality. They were very well manufactured, to the point where the Leica I have that's from just after WWII is still functioning with no issues where the two Konica, a Canon, and an Olympus that I've used all have had at least minor issues that I've had to tinker with to get them running smoothly again. They were also the first stills camera to use 35mm film. Being the first to be on the market probably played a pretty big role. Because of that, they became a luxury brand. They still make great cameras, and their old ones hold value well because they tend to last a long time with little maintenance needed, but generally speaking they are overpriced compared to what you get out of other similar cameras. It's still possible to get a cheaper Leica (mine, the iiif, only cost about $300), but the popular models have a huge price tag just because there's more people who want them than there are cameras up for sale.

The (my) Best Leica - 35mmc
November 13, 2023 - Nevertheless I have come to completely understand Oskar Barnack’s motivation for making the Leica camera in the first place. About 15 years ago I took my 8×10 to Venice. I carried the camera, my wife carried the lenses and film holders, and the mother-in-law carried the (very heavy) tripod – she’s still complaining about it.
