Thinkpad Docking station USB-C 40A9 vs 40AS
Lenovo USB-C dock 40AS or 40AY with macOS
USB-C Dock Gen 2 (40AS) supported resolution
PSA: Lenovo finally fixed the 40AS USB Type C Gen 2 dock, bye-bye black screens! P14s / T14 / X13 / T14s AMD owners don't have to suffer anymore!

I have T14 gen 1 20S0 with 40A9 and two monitors 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. It looks like 40A9 is only supporting 2550x1440 when one monitor connected to the docking station. For two monitors, the docking station only have option for 1920x1080.
Question, does 40AS comparable with T14 gen 1 (20S0) and will support dual monitor and output 2560x1440 and 1920x1080s at the same time?
Hello everyone,
I'm using for remote work this setup:
-
Apple MacBook Pro 2021 M1
-
4K 34inches Samsung external monitor
-
Lenovo USB-C dock ref 40AY or 40AS (can have and tested both for results below)
This is my test result when connecting external display:
-
Monitor -> HDMI -> Dock -> USB-C -> M1
-
KO
-
-
Monitor -> DP -> Dock -> USB-C -> M1
-
KO
-
-
Monitor -> DP -> 3rd part generic dock -> USB-C -> M1
-
OK
-
it's a 20 bucks cheap aliexpress one
-
-
Monitor -> HDMI -> HDMI-to-USBC cable -> USB-C -> M1
-
OK
-
it's a 15 bucks cheap amazon one
-
-
Monitor -> HDMI -> M1
-
OK
-
Bonus for cross testing
-
Monitor -> HDMI/DP -> Dock -> usb-C -> cheap generic windows laptop
-
OK
-
Tests above, well, speaks by themselves.
BUT: is there any support page/ official communication from Lenovo about not supporting 4k resolution on a macOS ? If yes please give me a working link/source.
This is not for me directly, but for my company, to show them that Lenovo is not supporting MacOS officially.
Thanks, feedback will be appreciated from official support team !

Hey, I have some issues with my X13 Gen2 (also tested with the Steam Deck and a Dell laptop, although I don't know their technical details) and my USB-C Dock Gen 2. Both are supposed to support DP1.4 via USB-C to my understanding. The dock is supposed to support two times 4k@60Hz via the DP ports.
I have two monitors connected to the dock via DP, one 1440p and one 1080p. The later one is 60Hz max. What should be the maximum possible refresh rate of the 1440p monitor? 1440p@120Hz should require less bandwidth than 4k/60Hz. Sadly everything beyond 1440p@60Hz + 1080p@60Hz leaves both displays blank, not even 1440p@120Hz + 1080p@60Hz does work. Is this a bug? Otherwise, where is this limitation coming from, the dock, the laptop or is maybe just the cable broken? The 1440p is running at 144Hz (165Hz doesn't work) without the other monitor plugged in. It just doesn't work with both displays plugged in.
Before trying to fix this problem any longer (or invest more money into new stuff) I would like to avoid that this is just a misunderstanding on my side and having both screens at 60Hz is actually the limit for some reason.
HALLELUJA Brothers and Sisters, there is a new firmware for the USB-C Gen2 40AS dock and it seems to be working just fine for a while now using the following firmware/driver combination:
Firmware: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_usb-c_dock_gen2_fw_v1.0.8.03231.exe
Radeon Driver: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r1bap05w.exe
If you have any issues, dont even consider going to their support forum, i've seen chimps on reddit with more observable intelligence than most ""support specialists"" there.
And not like anybody cares, but as of today i'm done with this sub.
All the shitposting is bloody annoying if you ask me and simply has nothing to do on a technology focused sub in my opinion. 70+% of the posts have zero information, 25% cant use search and as much as the rest of the 5% of this sub is amazing with mods/howto's and tonnes of good info and a just a handful of people who are actually know their shit... but i just cant be assed to shift through the shite for a speck of gold. Never thought i would say this but this sub could do with a moderator or two.
Good luck peeps and have fun!
I have two identical Lenovo 40AS Gen 2 docking stations. Yesterday, seemingly out of nowhere, they stopped supporting external displays. I tried three different monitors - two from Dell and one from Lenovo. None of them work with either one of the docking stations. All three work when directly plugged into one of two Lenovo laptops. I also tried various original USB-C cords to no avail. When I try updating the firmware through Lenovo vantage or directly it failed because of the DP hub.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Does anyone have a solution or a concept of a solution? Thanks a ton for your input in advance! This is really torpedoing our families working from home situation.
The wiki says to avoid 40AS docks due to connectivity issues. It seems Lenovo has released a very similar but new 40AY dock. Search for 40AY0090US.
Does anybody have experience with this one?
So I have been under the impression that my dock is compatible with power delivery over USB-C, that’s what the documentation states (up to 60W). But I can’t for the life of me get it to work, I have both a Mac and Windows machine and neither work with this. I’m using the factory cable, power supply, and I’ve updated the firmware - am I missing anything?
Many thanks!
Hey guys, after what I believe was some thorough research, I compiled a full list of all models compatible with the (now discontinued) mechanical UltraDock (40AJ0135US).
I have been using an X1C6 with it since it came out and am starting to require more performance. So I am trying to find the most powerful model out of all of these. Consider first and foremost newest CPU generation, best discreet graphics, and maximum supported RAM. I do not care much about things like weight, size, or screen specs.
I am just looking for the model with the newest and most powerful chips with discreet graphics and highest potentiel RAM. Please consider the fully specced versions of these models as that would be the option I will hunt for.
It is sad the new thinkpads aren't compatible anymore. They could have been made a thunderbolt version of the mechanical docks, but I guess the market is changing. So I am on a mission to find the most powerful possible thinpad compatible with this great docking solution.
I would really appreciate any insight from the community. Here is the list below. Thank you!
