Linen will last much longer than cotton. However, initially linen sheets feel a bit rougher than cotton - BUT after a couple of washes it gets super soft. In terms of breathability, linen is much more breathable than cotton. It’s perfect for hot sleepers. If you want to get cotton sheets for hot sleepers, go for a long staple cotton percale set. With respect to thread counts, higher thread count does not always mean better quality. For example, if you’re getting cotton percale sheets, 200-300 thread count is better than 400 (in terms of durability). This is because legitimate percale sheets should have a high fabric denier or thread-thickness and it’s difficult to fit more than ~300 threads per square inch. However, if you’re getting sateen weave sheets, then go for a thread count between 400-800 (they have a low fabric denier). Anything higher than 800TC and they won’t be that durable (and/or fake). The difference between percale and sateen weave is that percale gives you that crispy feeling (think hotel sheets) whereas sateen gives you that soft silky feeling. Lastly, pricing - linen will be (or at least should be) a lot more expensive than cotton. I know this may be a sheet ton of info, but I hope it helps you make an informed decision!

I sleep in long staple cotton with 400 thread count and it's so breathable. It's like linen, but softer.

The Battle of the Naturals: Linen VS Cotton Bedding | Piglet in Bed US
June 27, 2025 - There are very few cons to choosing linen bed sheets as they’re suitable for all seasons and ideal for those who run cold or warm when they sleep. The material does crease quite easily but we consider this just part of its charm: life is too short to be worrying about ironing your bed sheets. Cotton is another natural fibre that has lots of super benefits when used as bedding.

March 27, 2025 -
I’m shopping for new bedding and stuck between linen and cotton. I’ve heard linen’s great for staying cool in summer, but it’s so expensive and looks kinda wrinkly—does it really feel good to sleep on? Cotton seems softer and cheaper, but will I overheat? Anyone got experience with either (or both)? Pros, cons, or just tell me what you’d pick and why!

I prefer linen. It gets softer the more you wash it and I like the relaxed look of it. I sleep hot so prefer it to cotton.

April 5, 2023 - Typically, linen bedding fabric has a thread count between 80 and 150. The threads created from flax are very thick thus lowering the thread count. Because of the lower thread count, it can appear that these types of bed sheets are of lower quality than cotton fabric but, in fact, they are the most durable sheets on the market...

Linen Sheets vs. Cotton Sheets: Should You Buy Linen or Cotton Sheets?
May 11, 2023 - Thread counts are much lower for linen, as the flax fibers are thicker and the weave is usually visible, whereas with cotton, it’s difficult to see the tiny individual fibers. Linen is also commonly advertised as “stone-washed” or “enzyme-washed” which usually means the breaking-in and multiple washing process is mostly done for you—i.e. the linen comes to you soft, not stiff. Read on for our (passionate) pros and cons for each bedding material.
