Great-grandpa was a builder all his life and died of mesothelioma in the late 1970s. So, it's safe to say that the man worked with a lot of asbestos. The flooring in the kitchen and laundry room of the house is clearly sheets, not tiles. I don't know if its technically vinyl or linoleum. More on doityourself.com
YSK if you live in an older house (pre 1980) that has linoleum or laminate flooring it may contain asbestos.
Please remember that asbestos is bad -- if you ingest or inhale it. Asbestos that is firmly bound is not an issue until you (ignorantly) take a grinder or sander to it. Treat all asbestos with respect, but it's mainly the loose woolly or flaky stuff -- or sanding or grinding dust -- that is of concern. I feel it's important to have a rational understanding of risks. There are lots of companies which test for asbestos very cheaply, they send you a tube which you full up with a sample of whatever you need tested, and send it back, they'll then tell you if it's asbestos or something else that is nasty. I think they usually charge $35 or something similar. I wouldn't go solely based on the year, maybe the original builders cheaped out and used New Old Stock tiles from the early 1980s or late 1970s which have asbestos in them. Hi all, Here is a few pictures of linoleum floor I ripped up today that I'm not sure about. Did about 35-40sq before I thought anything about asbestos. Did work with a crowbar (luckily no power saws or anything of that nature used) Heard that throws up wayyy more dust. To be honest was a very dust free process. Although I do understand i cannot see the asbestos fibers. Looked like a 5/8" sheet of particle board first then original 12"×12" linoleum tile with backing paper. Then newer vinyl tile probably from the 80's also 12" by 12". I'm sending out all to a lab today. Place was built in 1966. I didn't see any black mastic or any sticky oily substances on anything which is what I was told to look out for. I could be wrong. Just disappointed and worried now that I didn't think to do this before. I know none of us know for sure this doesn't or does have asbestos but what are your best assumptions? I feel like a fucking idiot.
