Recommendations for low light house plants?
Contrary to what advertising for dark room plants say, all plants prefer bright indirect light. No plants like darkness. Some plants can survive low light for extended times, but it is less they can live in lowlight and more they very slowly die in lowlight. With that in mind, I recommend getting a plant light or lights for any plants you buy and put in your dark apartment. I use the yellow version of this light set for my plant area in my house as I have the same issue. I keep it on a separate timer. At my office, I have a sun loving succulent that is thriving on my desk under a lamp like this one . I keep it set for 12 hours of light a day. Having said that, ZZ plants and snake plants are legendary for surviving years in dark areas and little to no water. ZZs are known for thriving on neglect. To the point that they are mistaken by people as fake and only noticed to be real when they finally start dying from no water. There are multiple tales on this subreddit of people leaving their ZZ in a dark closet for 6+ months, only to find it later, give it bright light and water, and get new shoots almost immediately. Is there a list of low light, pet safe plants?
I have three cats and all my plants are safe. However they are all bright direct or bright indirect light plants. I don't have low light plants safe for cats as I find growing them too difficult and time consuming. Anyway what comes to my mind: all true ferns Saintpaulia Maranta Calathea Aspidistra elatior Phalaenopsis Pellonia pulchra Chlorophytum comosum some varieties of peperomia. some varieties of fittonia Mind that low light means at least 200 foot candles. All plants I mentioned are not toxic for cats. If your apartment is really dark you will need some strong led bulbs or grow lights. Some plants on the list will survive low light but they will not thrive. More on reddit.com

Philips Hue light setting for indoor plants
In our condo we have 2 rooms without windows, is there a color setting that is recommended for plants? From the research I’ve done so far it sounds like pink setting might do the trick because there would be no blue mixed in, and plants don’t like blue light apparently. More on reddit.com

Ring light for indoor plants?
Its not ideal, but its better than nothing. It won't hurt them. I have a couple cheap white LED spots on the ones in my bedroom (since I cant get them in line with direct light from the window) and they seem to like it - and I can tell because they are growing "greener" within the light spot. I'm in the same boat, cant get anything proper yet, and it's a lamp table with shelves that don't move so I'm constrained on size. But its keeping them alive until I can figure it out. https://i.imgur.com/I2OySsk.jpg More on reddit.com

January 30, 2018 - You may want to leave the lights on during the daytime if you can, when keeping the ZZ in a room with no windows at all. The prayer plant is often chosen for its vivacious colourings, such as the violet or red leaf stripes or white accents. Another neat trick this plant performs is folding up its leaves every night. You can keep them in low-light, but we don't recommend a no-light space.

October 10, 2025 - One thing to note is that snake plants are sensitive to being over-watered. If you don’t give them too much love and attention, it’s okay. They’ll be happy to dry out in between waterings. This is my second go-to low light plant because, like the snake plant, it can survive anywhere from low light to high light areas and it doesn’t mind a little neglect (we suggest watering when the soil is almost all the way dry).
