Currently have a desktop PC with RX 5700xt and i7 8700k which I use for 3d rendering on Blender. I will be switching to an M4 pro Macbook pro since I need the portability. How will the GPU in the M4 pro compare to my 5700xt? Is it powerful enough for 3D work on Blender?
Geekbench metal scores:
MacBook Pro with M4 Max (40-core GPU): 190,329
Mac mini with M4 Pro (20-core GPU): 110,556
According to macrumors, these benchmarks look to be about up to 40% better for M4 pro vs. M3 pro, and 25% faster for M4 Max vs M3 Max.
For comparison:
Mac Studio M2 Ultra (76 core GPU): 221646
Mac Studio M1 Ultra: 160514
Macbook Pro M3 Max (40 core GPU): 154860
Mac Studio M2 Max (38 core GPU): 144948
Mac Studio M1 Max: 104517
I migrated from a 14" M1 max with 32gb ram to this and have been running it for about a week now. The M1 was great, but with the recent need for a VM it had become RAM limited. I really didn't have any other reason to upgrade.
But wow... the performance is insane. And you should not buy a Mac for gaming, but if you have this computer and the games you play are on Mac.. it's incredible.
I watched a few upgrade video reviews before I purchased as I was considering just getting a cheaper M3 Max with more ram, but noticed all the small upgrades that the M4 had for my use cases. Not to mention the brighter display if you ever like working on, say, a porch.
Really probably the most impressive apple device I remember having, it simply feels like the perfect laptop at this point.
