AVD pricing with M365 Business Premium - ITCloud.ca
October 20, 2022 - You can reduce costs by using Azure Reserved Instance and some automated scaling to switch machines off when they’re not being used. Reserving a virtual desktop for a longer time usually results in a larger discount (41% for a one-year reservation or about 62% for a three-year reservation). Let’s look at one of the most popular scenarios for an SMB. A small company is using Microsoft 365 Business Premium and has an accounting software on-premises (Acomba or QuickBooks for example).

Inside 365 Business Premium: The Features You Might Not Know - Get Support IT Services
August 29, 2021 - You might just be surprised at what’s possible with this premium-tier 365 subscription. Let’s get started. One thing that makes this particular subscription so premium is the scalability it offers. That’s thrown into sharp relief with the inclusion of Windows Virtual Desktop. This feature allows you to quickly deploy virtual workstations using either Windows 7 (despite being end-of-life, it’ll be supported until January 2023) or Windows 10 using the Azure virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), access to which is included as part of your Business Premium plan.

r/Office365 on Reddit: Azure Virtual Desktop Office 365 Licensing Requirements
May 26, 2023 -

It's been a couple years since I have been involved in an AVD deployment. Back then, there were specific licensing requirements for Office inside an AVD environment.

I cannot seem to find documentation anymore - is there still a licensing requirement? Or have those gone away, and something as simple as Business Standard will work?

Note: I am not referring to the Windows licensing requirements to use AVD; I am specifically referring to Office 365.

Licensing Azure Virtual Desktop - What You Need to Know | Ensono
In order to implement AVD, a business needs an eligible licence and subscription for each user they wish to connect. For those who already make use of Microsoft services, many will already have access to AVD. The following licences provide eligibility for virtual Windows 7 or Windows 10 desktops ... It should be reemphasised that these need to be per user licences in order to access Windows 7 or 10 with AVD. Also, whilst any Microsoft 365 licence grants access to the entire Office 365 suite, Windows licences would require additional Office licensing.

r/AZURE on Reddit: Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 11, and Business Premium
January 27, 2025 -

Hi all, sanity check required here if I may...

We've been running a small AVD deployment with the AVD hosts on Windows 10. We'd like to replace these with some Windows 11 VMs.

The current Win10 machines are using the image "Windows (Windows 10 Enterprise for Virtual Desktops)".
All users have 365 Business Premium licensing, which I understood effectively licenses the operating system on the VMs for their use case in Azure.

While going through creation of the Windows 11 VMs to replace them, I could not find a direct Win11 equivalent to the above image.
The nearest I can find in the marketplace is "Windows multi-session + Microsoft 365 Apps", under which I can select "Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session, version 24H2 + Microsoft 365 Apps".

However, having selected this, I'm still required to tick the box for "I confirm I have an eligible Windows 10/11 license with multi-tenant hosting rights" before I'm able to create the VM.

Can anyone confirm this is normal, that this is the correct image to select, and that AVD licensing in Windows 11 works in the same way it did in Windows 10? Or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks!

Microsoft Managed fully manages the Business version, so there is no local admin. The Enterprise version does allow customers -- in this case, the IT department -- to manage networking. Windows 365 offers very little flexibility compared to Azure Virtual Desktop.
