Windows Defender with controlled folder access enabled + uBlock Origin on your browser(s) is very good protection indeed.
Malwarebytes is expensive, but you can use it for manual scans. When you install it, it will give you 2 weeks of premium protection. Set it to "Never register with Windows security center" so both Malwarebytes and Defender are active (this is okay to do - MBAM is designed to work w/ a proper antivirus.) Turn off the ransomware module as well, and set it to not alert you it's off. When the trial period is over, set it to NOT start with Windows, as it will constantly nag you to buy it, plus it's pointless to keep it running in the background as it's not doing any active scanning.
