They’re as useless as usps is as a whole. They’ll tell you after the 6 months passes that basically it’s your fault something was lost. Zero accountability. They never look into anything it’s just an automated system. Answer from UncannyAnomaly on reddit.com

r/usps_complaints on Reddit: Has anyone had success with a "Missing Mail Search" on USPS?
December 21, 2022 -

I had a fairly valuable priority mail flate rate bubble envelope shipped to me. The package was initially scanned in at a distribution center in NY. There were no updates for a week and I submitted a help request form.

USPS actually called me (which surprised me) and stated there has not been a physical scan for a while. She said I should file a "missing mail claim" and they she flagged the shipment. She continued that sometimes just flagging the package will have it moving again. I submitted the missing mail form last week, but there have not been any updates on it.

I have a small hobby business and ship USPS A LOT. I've had packages take a long time to be delivered, but I've never ran into a package having a single scan then never having an additional scan for multiple weeks. At this point, I'm wondering if I should keep patient or submit an insurance claim? There is insurance on the package, but the contents are sentimental as well as valuable and I'd rather have the package.

Has anyone submitted a Missing Mail Search with USPS and have it work? Additionally, if anyone has any input on filing an insurance claim, I'd be interested in that as well. Thanks!

After multiple days of continuously stating "moving through network" after arriving to the Fairburn, GA facility, I was convinced to submit a missing mail search based off of others advice in this subreddit. Low and behold I wake up this morning with the package making progress. Second picture is the Fairburn facility at the bottom, and the Palmetto facility at the top. Crazy that it took 4 days to travel 2.4 miles!

Don't rely on USPS to sort things out on their own, valuable lesson learned. It's unfortunate that I'm having to take time out of my day to help them do their job. This has given me unnecessary stress and anxiety to deal with, and has even gotten to the point of losing sleep over worry.

Due to this, and the plethora of other issues that are currently affecting the USPS, I have decided to temporarily close my online store that I own. I can not possibly rely on a company that is this complacent to have my customer's best interests in mind.

Sorry for all that are experiencing issues, and I truly hope your packages arrive soon. DO BETTER USPS!

December 18, 2024 -

I had a package that went more than two weeks with no scans or updates of any kind. It was stuck on accepted.

I filled out a Help Request form- they got back to me in 3 business days and told me they couldn’t find any additional info on my package. They suggested I contact the sender.

Instead I did a Missing Mail Search. 24 hours later- my package has been found and its out for delivery!

I strongly suggest people try filling out the Missing Mail Search form- add as much info as you can like the senders address. Hope it helps for some other people here!

Update: Its here! The label on the package was damaged. No idea if the missing mail search fixed things or not but it sure didn’t hurt!

r/usps_complaints on Reddit: How long does a missing mail search USUALLY take?
February 13, 2022 -

I’ve looked this up very generally online, and I’ve seen some responses say it can take anywhere from a few hours to 3 months (which is when USPS officially declares a package missing). Since there’s no way I’m waiting 3 months to find out about this, when would be an appropriate time to just get a refund from the sender? I already posted about my issue on here but basically: package shipped from one state over on the 24th of January, hasn’t moved since, called the USPS and complained a few times…now on the 8th of February I was able to file a help request. Didn’t hear a response for a few days so I called and the lady told me they closed the request without giving me any information or trying to contact me (other than to say they got my request 😬). She reopened the request, and over email I was told to submit a missing mail form. The search started yesterday, and I’m just wondering if anyone else has had to do this? The person sending the package has been very worried and I wonder if maybe I should just get a refund if I don’t hear anything by the end of this week. This is extremely frustrating, looking for any insight anyone might have on this.

Edit: forgot to mention that the delivery date was supposed to be Saturday the 29th of January.

January 29, 2025 -

Goto USPS.com and login. After you are logged into the site, visit this URL directly: https://missingmail.usps.com/#/

Using this method, I can get it to load every single time. When you click the link from the "missing mail and lost packages" page, the URL gets encoded with some sort of tracking tag which is what is causing the page to not load properly (potentially). When you use the link I provided, it bypasses that aspect. Definitely let me know if this works for you. Good luck.

EDIT: For those having issues. Do it on a computer browser, not a mobile/phone browser and this should still work.

EDIT 2: Since many of you don't want to spend time reading comments, and the 2nd method has been downvoted enough to be far down the page...

Alternatively, if this doesn't work, here is another method. You still must be logged in, then visit this link: https://missingmail.usps.com/#/history

Once on this page, click on the link that reads "New Search Request". This also works for me and is how I discovered the first method.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK ON THE FIRST TRY, KEEP TRYING. IT WILL WORK EVENTUALLY. COMMENTING "DOESN'T WORK" JUSTS SHOWS YOUR LACK OF PATIENCE... IT DOES INDEED WORK.

It can be used to identify you. ... yeah i saw this advice as well. my package was only a day late, but it had been in a distribution center literally 10 minutes from me for a couple days. it was too early for me to report it as missing mail, but after i tried to initiate the inquiry, it was finally scanned at my local post office and then out for delivery the same day.

After a week, I contacted customer service, but they did nothing, only apologized. I went to USPS to ask at the counter, but she did nothing. She told me, Don't you see it said the weather delay?. I said I know, but it has been a week not moving. I decided to file a missing mail search yesterday because someone mentioned it on Reddit (thank you to @kkstoryteller). It works in 12 hours after filing a missing mail search. It is finally 19 away from the destination.

r/EtsySellers on Reddit: USPS delayed or is missing package--order not covered by purchase protection

So I had an order of three original paintings placed mar 28. They were scheduled to ship by April 18th. I shipped earlier, on April 5th. I shipped them in two separate packages. One painting (thankfully the more expensive one) was delivered April 9. The other one made it to the buyers local distribution center, but then wound up in a totally different state 😭 since then I have only received one scan on April 19 saying it's arriving late. I filed a missing mail search Friday.

This $800 order didn't qualify for purchase protection. I have been communicating with the buyer about how this package is arriving late. The buyer did contact me about only receiving one painting and said she loved it, but also said she didn't receive the other two. I responded they were arriving separately and she should have received two tracking numbers and sent her the tracking for the package that hadn't arrived. And then I had to update her that it went to another state and would be arriving later than expected. Haven't received a response.

I was just curious what you all would do if the package still hasn't arrived or received an updated scan in a week. Should I just go ahead and issue a refund for the two missing paintings? I don't want the buyer to open a case and Etsy automatically refund them for all three paintings! If I were to refund I would file a claim and fill out a package intercept form so that way if it is found it would hopefully come back to me.

Ask for patience with the missing mail search. Check the buyer's vibe - are they willing to be patient? Mail is rarely rarely lost. It will almost certainly turn up and head in the right direction. Expect to give it a couple weeks for results after filing the missing mail search. Reassure the buyer that you are on top of it and engaged with the search. Give them a firm deadline after which if it still hasn't turned up, you'll refund. I'd recommend asking for 4 weeks from now - say that it should take a couple weeks for a response to the missing mail search, then potentially an additional couple weeks for it to be located and delivered. It hopefully won't take that long, but that's making your safety net as wide as possible. If it hasn't turned up by the end of May, at that point I'd say it's lost. Don't lose hope. I would be VERY surprised if this doesn't turn up. I would try to avoid proactively refunding. Only do that if the buyer is being an asshole that will not be patient. I would not redirect / intercept. That isn't guaranteed to work.

I truly hope since it was too much for BP that you insured the shipment for full value. That will save your butt in the event it gets lost or damaged. I found the independent insurance companies [shipsurance] are better at covering claims than the carrier insurances. If the package is still showing it's at distribution center, I'd start with the post office you sent it out. Have them put a trace on it to see if it's truly lost or still in the system. Interesting thing when I've had to ask for it to be traced after a item takes a long vacation at a shipping hub, seems that inquiry gets the package moving. I'd assume it gets shuffled to the side at the hub and when the trace is requested, they have to manually track it down and then put it into the next shipment to it's destination. If you can get it verified that it is indeed on it's way to the buyer, I'd probably still issue them like a small refund to compensate for the delay. If it truly is lost, then I would go with what you said. Refund for the two missing paintings so you don't get stuck refunding all three.
