Which all-purpose winter mountain jacket do you recommend?
For your activity list, you’ll likely end up with many different types of layers, especially if you intend to put real physical effort into these things. Edit: read about layering basics at REi.com Layering Basics For your list, one coat or jacket will not suffice. You’ll either be too hot, too cold, or too wet (and cold). Layering is key for heat management. That said, if all you ever do is go to the shops or get coffee, almost anything will do. More on reddit.com
Opinions about a North face mountain jacket and a hoodie+tshirt underneath in Winter?
As long as its insulated it should be fine, good gloves, scarfs and boots are important too. More on reddit.com
TNF Mountain Jacket vs Arcteryx Beta Jacket
the mountain jacket is now a retro lifestyle jacket based on an iconic jacket. it still has goretex and will keep you dry but not the most ideal to hike in or travel with. it has larger cuffs, high collar and pronounced velcro. it's a relaxed fit which makes it a bit boxy but that's the intended look and you can cinch up the little pull strings on the bottom to get that rounded hemmed look. it's a 2 layer gore with a hanging liner. the beta is a lot lighter, more packable and a great performer. the cuffs are lower profile and the material is overall more malleable, although crinkly. the newer one is a 3 layer gore epe with c-knit; mine is a 3 layer gore pro. it'll feel like a thin jacket made of a single layer. this will obviously lean more on the performance side of things being more breathable, packable and lighter overall. it depends on what your needs are. i own both. i prefer the beta for the fit, but my beta is the older beta lt and it had a better fit for me but it's been revised a few times so i wouldn't pick it up today based on the modern revised fit. they both fit a little short so that's some getting used to. i've travelled with my beta lt and it packs well, easier to layer with a 800 down mid layer and fits really well on me. it's a good hiking jacket even though the majority of people buying these things nowadays use it majority in the city. the mountain jacket is a little heavier material, has a thin hanging lining layer inside sewed in and feels like it's more substantial. in terms of longevity, the mountain feels like it'll last longer and take more of a beating. both will give you the gorp look although the mountain would probably stand out more in my opinion. tnf has better warranty (based on my actual experience). Favorite jacket for mountaineering?
Layering is key. I typically go with a merino wool (or patagonia capilene) base layer, some type of fleece mid layer, and then a soft/hard shell ski jacket. Oh and I keep a extra puffy in my pack. More on reddit.com
