What You'll Need: ✔️Closet shelf (2) - approximately 10" x 41". We bought a 48" shelf and had the store cut it down to 41.5" to reach the outer edges of each bed post. If possible, measure the exact width of your bed before cutting down the shelf, dorm bed sizes vary. If unsure, go a little longer than shorter. ✔️2 shelf brackets - we used 8"x10" brackets. ✔️Zip ties - 18" zip ties would be a good length for this project. We used 14" in the video but longer would make it easier to pull them tightly. You want at least 75lb tensile zip ties. ✔️Adhesive - Alien tape is an easy to use adhesive for this project, but you could use another adhesive of your choice. ✔️Scissors BONUS TIP: If your pillows or blankets are falling between the length of your bed and the wall, 2 words - POOL NOODLE. Just cut a slit into the length of a pool noodle and place it over your side bed rail. The gap is 8 inches when the bed is down but temporarily gets much smaller as the bed folds up. Would love some ideas on how to fill this so my pillow doesn't keep falling in lol

Our spare bedroom has a very similar style murphy bed and we just put a board across the space using "L" brackets to hold up the board. We screwed the L brackets into the bedframe spaced evenly around the frame for maximum support and place the board on the brackets and a couple of screws to hold it in place. The board filled the gap nicely and kept the pillows from falling down into the void space. You just gotta make sure you adjust the height so that you're still able to close the bed when not in use.

My intention was to craft something that could collapse, but when 'out' would be level with my mattress. I had been thinking I would use the space to put a long backrest/wedge/reading pillow. Working on it now. If I come up with some functional; I'll share. Hubby and I are looking at condos and we think we can deal with a tiny space but the idea of folding our bed up and down every morning and night makes me cringe. Is it as bad as I think or do you get used to it?

They're bullshit. Forget any pictures you see or the whole 'it just take 30 seconds to push up to the wall' - no one does it as its not worth it. If the reason is because there's some cool coffee table attached to the bottom then the fact is you end up feeling like a cheap poor shit, eating and drinking from a table attached to your bed. Had one for years in a rental. It never went up. I ate at the coffee table.

I don't have experience with a Murphy bed, but I used to live in Japan and had to fold up my futon and put it away every morning and it turned into a routine I really enjoyed! And overall I really liked the slickness of all the space saving ideas, like a Murphy bed for example, and how simple life was in a smaller space. It can be really cozy and nice and there's something refreshing about transforming your space regularly
