Hello. I work in IT including the education sector. What I would do Go see the IT staff that installed the software. Thank them for getting you back on the network. Then ask why they installed the software, how it works and did they find any issues with your device. You'll see below that I think the staff behaved badly, for people that work in education but being rude back won't help. Software Is it Sophos Home or Sophos Home Premium? If the school has one of the big packages then they get licences they can provide to staff and students. Neither of these can be monitored by the school. If you open up the virus checker and look for history, you should see they have run a scan. The time taken indicates this is what they were doing. Allowed and why Regardless it was rude of them to install anything without explaining to you what they did. IT staff are not always at human interactions but they should be, especially in education. Is the computer your own property outright or did you buy it from the school, pay installments, etc. If so they probably have the right to do so, by logging in you effectivly gave them permission but it was unfair of them - you couldn't really say no. Equally by using the network,you probably agreed to only use a device with appropriate virus protection on the network (they should have explained this). BYOD - Bring Your Own Device. This is when someone uses a device on your network. Because we have less control we add more restrictions or require greater security on devices. Often one of these requirements is an up-to-date virus checker. It is possible they have installed new security that has checked for this and this stopped your WiFi working. The IT usage policy, is basically to protect the school from your actions. So if you surf or do something inappropriate they can hold you to account. It is likely a legal requirement, in UK we have a legal responsibility to keep our students safe on site. The fact they asked you to sign one is quite nice, we just say by using our WiFi you agree to terms. Read the IT use policy they want you to sign. It will say they have the right to monitor your internet usage (this is because firewalls will be monitoring traffic and if you visit a concerning site they will want to review). It will also say they don't want you to bully other students, surf for dodgy things, etc. Monitoring staff and students We really try not to if possible. Onsite we have a legal requirement to do so. But off-site if you are searching for inappropriate material at home that is between you and your parents. Morally it becomes difficult, if we monitor your home use and you search for LGBT and that triggers a warning, any conversations with parents could endanger students wellbeing. Also it is creepy.
