What language uses the word "soul" interchangeably with "person"? (The Soul called Mr Barrister John Barosa)
Most of these examples seem to be examples of metonymy -- where a language has separate words for "person" and for "soul", but uses the latter to mean the former in a metaphorical sense. I think the question is: are there any languages where there is no distinction between these terms -- and if so, should that be taken to mean that "all persons are souls" or simply that the concept of "soul" does not exist? (Not in a strongly Sapir-Whorf sense, but that the speakers of the language don't consider the concept prominent enough to merit its own word). More on reddit.com

r/linguistics on Reddit: What language uses the word "soul" interchangeably with "person"? (The Soul called Mr Barrister John Barosa)
November 12, 2021 -

In this hilarious scambaiting video from Atomic Shrimp, the scammer from an unidentified country, possibly UAE, uses the word "soul" in the sense of "person, guy/dude". For example, "you are here to follow my instructions and not one soul called Barrister John Barosa".

The expression came up over and over again and became somewhat of a meme.

I'm curious if that usage of the word can hint to the scammer's native language as it appears to be a literal translation of sorts. What language uses the word "soul" as synonymous with "person"?

EDIT: an example of a literal translation that sounds off in English is the word for "person" in Hebrew, which is "Ben Adam", literally Son of Adam, ie. a human being. If I were a really thick Hebrew speaking scammer, I would have written "Do not contact the son of Adam John Barosa" or "Do not contact the human being John Barosa"

EDIT 2: Most answers here don't actually correspond to what I'm looking for: most are examples of metonymy as pointed out by one comment, as in the expressions "no soul to be seen", meaning no one (person) to be seen. I'm specifically looking for the usage of soul as an attribute to mean "person" as in "that person, John Barosa".

October 10, 2012 - A personal example would be that I frequently encounter problems with translating Chinese into or from English. Even though I speak and understand both languages quite well, there are certain barriers that one language cannot cross.
