NASA Plant Research Offers a Breath of Fresh Air | NASA Spinoff
Plants not only take in carbon dioxide and return oxygen, but they are exceptionally good at capturing harmful toxins from the air. NASA research has delved into how plants do this, and how to potentially use plants to provide clean air on long-duration space missions.

NASA Clean Air Study - Wikipedia
December 1, 2025 - Since the release of the initial 1989 study, titled A study of interior landscape plants for indoor air pollution abatement: An Interim Report, further research has been done including a 1993 paper and 1996 book by B. C. Wolverton, the primary researcher on the original NASA study, that listed additional plants and focused on the removal of specific chemicals.

NASA Plant Researchers Explore Question of Deep-Space Food Crops - NASA
September 28, 2023 - A variety of red potatoes called Norland were grown in the Biomass Production Chamber inside Hangar L at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida during a research study in 1992. ... Many of the early potato crop studies were done at the University of Wisconsin, where Wheeler worked prior to coming to Kennedy. Plant scientists at Kennedy used these fundamental findings as a starting point for their studies, and in particular, a variety called Norland red potatoes, using a large plant chamber called the Biomass Plant Production Chamber.

To help identify the right plants for a given indoor environment, Plant Drop Ltd. developed a Pollution Absorption System that describes the contaminant-absorbing efficacy of various houseplants. Using NASA-funded research into how different plants might be used to remove contaminants in spacecraft, the London-based plant and pot retailer chose to make the system open-source, sharing the information with everyone via its website.

Plant Research in Space is Cropping Up - ISS National Lab
May 16, 2024 - This means the way in which plant roots orient is not a function of gravity and instead an inherent feature of plant growth and development. The series of experiments that revealed these conclusions were supported by both the ISS National Lab and NASA and included both the Characterizing Arabidopsis Root Attractions-1 (CARA-1, affectionately called “Petri Plants”) project and APEX03-2 (Advanced Plant EXperiments), which investigated plants of various ages and genetic backgrounds.
