When you use your card overseas, you'll pay a non-sterling charge of 0% (in other words the currency conversion is at standard Visa rates). For, example, if you spend the local equivalent of £250, you'll be charged £0.00. · Because it's a Visa, you'll find it's accepted pretty much anywhere that takes card payments. · Compare options for keeping costs down when spending abroad.

How to Start Your Child’s College Fund - Nationwide
This account gives them the assets but allows the custodian to control them until the minor reaches legal age. This isn't considered a traditional college fund because the money doesn’t grow tax free. Also, it counts against the student and parent when applying for college financial aid, thus reducing the amount of financial aid that the school may offer your child.

Nationwide denied me student account
Just because you are a student it doesn’t mean you are entitled to a student account with an overdraft. I would just use your normal account. I really would avoid overdraft accounts at such a young age. Also it may be because you’ve not started studying yet. More on reddit.com

Nationwide student bank account
I used Nationwide a year ago, they're stuck in the year 1990 by giving you a physical card machine that you need to enter pin numbers into anytime you want to send money, it's ridiculous More on reddit.com

r/UKPersonalFinance on Reddit: Nationwide declined my student account application – no credit history, no overdraft requested. Why?
July 18, 2025 -

Hi everyone,

I tried to open a student bank account with Nationwide recently, but after the hard credit check, they declined me. What confuses me is that during the application I selected that I don’t want an overdraft, so I assumed it would be easier to get approved.

Is it purely because I don’t have any credit history yet? I never had a credit card, overdraft, or anything like that. I checked my credit score and it shows as “OK”, idk.

What do I do now? Thank you.

r/UKPersonalFinance on Reddit: Nationwide denied me student account
June 25, 2023 -

I applied for a Nationwide FlexStudent as I'm starting uni in September. In the middle of the application it said I'd be approved for the account and a £1k overdraft. I finished the application and this morning I got an email saying I'd been rejected.

"We're unable to offer you an account at this time because you don't meet our account opening criteria."

I found this strange as I already have a Nationwide current account so I asked their live chat what the problem was, and they told me that "the application has been denied given the number of credit searches noted on the credit bureaux."

I have been playing the account switching game, but none of the accounts I've never had a problem opening any of the accounts.

They said, "Initially when making the application you are Soft Credit Scored but on submission the application was declined given the number of credit searches noted on the credit bureaux."

I asked them what I could do and they sent me a link to a help page on credit scores. They also said I can't change my FlexDirect into a FlexStudent.

What should I do? Should I try a different bank? (which will now be more challenging given Nationwide have added another hard search to my report)
