What are the fees for a duplicate title in New Jersey?
Can I get a refund for NJ MVC fees?
Does the NJ MVC site allow for online payment of fees?
Hi All,
Purchasing a car from out of state. I am in NJ and buying from TX. They are connecting me with a transport company to do the delivery so that cost is not included here and done as a separate transaction. This is the car deal so far:
-
$32,850
-
GPS Tracker (InTouch) $797 (had told them to opt out of this, so working on this one)
-
6.625% Tax Rate - $2,301.99
-
Title $33
-
Buyers Tag $5
-
Processing/Handling $4.75
-
Reg Fee $654
-
Doc Fee $150
Total Fees for Title Reg & Doc: $846.75
GPS Tracker: $797 (working to remove this of course)
Taxes: $2,301.99
Its a BMW X5, now curious does this look right?
-
Taxes are $2301.99, which if using 6.625% that means they are calculating tax based off of $34,747.02. Even with all the fees, I can't see how they got this tax number? The sheet itself says 6.625%.
-
Shouldn't tax be taken on the selling price ($32,850)? Or is it after the mentioned fees is tax calculated from?
-
Does that registration fee for a used car for NJ seem right? I thought it would be about $400
-
If they play hardball about the GPS tracker and not removing it, do I have any options to play here?
Thanks all. I have not signed the paperwork yet, only applied for financing to see the rates with them and with my CU.
Update: Found this link to NJ tax guides. As I understand, the title and reg fees should not be included. Doc fees can be included for tax calculations.
9. Are Motor Vehicle Commission fees taxable? No. Charges for the actual costs of title and registration fees imposed by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission are not subject to tax. These fees and documents are required by the State of New Jersey.

So with that said, it should be $32,850 + $150 + $797 = $33,797 * 0.06625 = 2,239.05, so $61 off somewhere. This look right?
