Sometimes when the CMOS battery dies the BIOS will reset the drive configuration from AHCI to RAID. If that’s the case, you would not be able to see your hard drive until you swap the configuration back to AHCI. This is a common issue with Dell workstations. I actually just fixed two Dell Latitude laptops with this issue by replacing their CMOS batteries so can confirm it is very much still a problem (and has been since first experiencing the issue in 2012). When removing the CMOS battery the BIOS would reset back to RAID and the hard drive will be inaccessible. Not sure if that’s the issue you’re experiencing but definitely worth a shot. Edit: to clarify, make sure your BIOS drive configuration is set to AHCI not RAID. Answer from eggplant_zoo on reddit.com

July 23, 2025 - As soon as I disconnected the external adapter, Disk Management found all other drives. I had/have the same problem. I found that if I tap F12 to get the boot menu, it shows my M.2 SSD drive as an option. If I select that, it boots every time. I have no idea why this works, as I've never seen this behavior before.

I ran into this issue recently. A simple fix that worked for me was to go into the BIOS Setup (continuously press F12 when you power on your Dell laptop) and do the following:
- Select "Legacy" under General > Boot Sequence > Boot List Option (You can also uncheck the Diskette Drive checkbox so your HDD/SSD can be the first boot device)
- Under General > Advanced Boot Options, select "Enable Legacy Option ROMs".
- Go to Secure Boot > Secure Boot Enable and select "Disabled".
That worked for me and my Dell system now boots straight to the Ubuntu installation.

Hello, this indicates that the computer is not detecting your hard drive. This is likely due to a faulty hard drive. You will need to acquire a new hard drive and install it in your device.

July 5, 2016 - Downgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 7 and got the dreaded No bootable devices found. After flowing the above with no luck I discovered that where I had changed to Legacy boot the BIOS had decided that boot from Diskette should be at the top of the boot order. Removed this and put the SSD to the top and all is now fine. Thanks this article helped a lot! I had this issue with a Dell e6430 (BIOS v.A21) after clean installing Windows onto a new SSD.
