software/web developer In no real order: Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach by James Kurose Eloquent JavaScript by Marijn Haverbeke Web Design with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery by Jon Duckett (Set of two books) Addendum: You can mostly skip the JQuery stuff, it's mostly useful if you get stuck in an old JQuery project at some point. edit: Also, the books will be slightly out of date with regards to newer features. They're still good reads, but you should be familiar with MDN for referencing up-to-date documentation on HTML, CSS, and JS. Cryptography Engineering: Design Principles and Practical Applications by Ferguson, Schneier, & Kohno For backend, you'll just have to learn a given language and it's framework: C# and ASP.NET, Java and Spring, Go and Http or one of it's many framework libs (Chi, Echo, Gin), JavaScript and Node.js (also has frameworks like Express or Nest), etc. More generally: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs by Sussman & Ableson There's a JS version available too, but I'd recommend the original Scheme version. You can check out both versions and pick the one you prefer. This is a more long-term book for learning foundational principles. The Pragmatic Programmer by Thomas & Hunt Introduction to Algorithms aka CLRS Algorithms by Sedgewick & Wayne Introduction to the Theory of Computation by Sipser Bit of a warning, it's been awhile since I read this one but I think it introduces things like computational complexity and automata theory which can be extremely useful, but I may be misremembering. A book on hardware, iirc the one I originally read was The Principles of Computer Hardware by Alan Clements, but Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software by Charles Petzold is also highly regarded. Don't feel pressured to read all of these btw, ideally your university program will introduce you to some of them or suitable alternatives over time.
