Games never push your GPU to the same degree OCCT would, but you could still encounter instability issues from time to time. Loads are very different between games - while it would run fine in 9/10 games, the tenth game it starts to crash constantly. Answer from Jaba01 on reddit.com

r/overclocking on Reddit: How reliable is OCCT for a stability test?
February 6, 2025 -
Hello, I have a few questions about OCCT as a stability test. How reliable are these tests? I was testing my GPU overclock using the 3D Adaptive "extreme" test, testing various overclocks. I set +200 on core clock and +1500 on memory clock in MSI Afterburner. Other benchmarks and games were always stable but as soon as I ran the OCCT test it showed me a lot of errors. So I decreased core clock to +150 and left memory clock at +2000 and let it run for another half hour. This time I had no errors. Does this mean that my first overclock despite being stable in games was indeed NOT stable? And does that mean that my second overclock now should be in fact stable as there were no errors?

I’ve been overclocking my 5080. Using afterburner I passed OCCT, Furmark, 3DMark at +460 / + 2000. I played apex legends, cod and cyberpunk with no issue. I played Fortnite and that’s when the crashing started. I’m now down to 440/500 with 108 on power limit.

PC immediately shuts down on Power test
This one's easy : a clean, instant shutdown on the power test is 99% of the time caused by a power supply that can't handle the load. Games don't load your components at 100% - sometimes it's waiting on the CPU, sometimes in the GPU, so things even out at a rough 50-70% usually ( depending on the game ). Sometimes you encounter conditions when the load will go higher - the scene to draw is simple, another process kicks in on your CPU, ... And this is when your PSU puts itself in safe mode as it detected that it couldn't handle the load. In short, you triggered a protection feature on your power supply because it can't handle the load. There're two ways of fixing this : change your power supply to a higher rated ( and known brand !) one. Another way of tackling this is to lower the power consumption of your computer : undervolting your GPU, undervolting your CPU, lowering their frequency in the process if not enough. It'll cost you some performance probably, bit at least you won't reboot. If you can afford it, I recommend changing your power supply, as it is, in my opinion, one of the most critical components of your computer. It's feeding every pricy component with power, and if it fails, there's a possibility it won't go down alone ( even if there're protections as you experience them here). More on reddit.com
Is OCCT free?

Can I use OCCT to benchmark my CPU and GPU?
OCCT is primarily a stress test tool used for checking stability issues. With this program you can stress test your CPU, GPU and determine the memory usage on your system. You can configure the app to stop the test when the temperature is too high or when it finds any error so you can prevent hardware failures.

6 Reasons Why OCCT Is My Go-To Tool for Stress Testing CPUs and GPUs - Make Tech Easier
November 27, 2024 - While simple to start, it still offers FFT-based stress testing and advanced functions like Prime95. You can configure load type, instruction set, threading behavior, stress intensity, and many other vital functions. I won’t say it’s more powerful than a tool like AIDA64, but it does a great job of balancing simplicity and customization. One of the biggest reasons I prefer OCCT is its all-in-one nature.

OCCT power test issues - PCPartPicker
I was then guessing it was probably a short somewhere with the new fans I installed but the weirdest part is that I also tested my other computer with a 12900k and 6800 with c850 nzxt 80+ gold unit and this time running the same OCCT power test it didn’t show errors but instead made a long sustained beep noise coming from inside the computer the whole test, so I stopped the test to avoid damaging anything as I had no idea why this would happen.

Is there anything I can do about it.There is probably an official forum for the game in question, and maybe you can file an issue there. Or otherwise contact the game author about the issue.

Maybe the issue is about the game that doesn't play very fine along with your setup.

Benchmark your computer's CPU as well as push it to its limits by overclocking it with the help of this useful and user-friendly tool The bane of overclockers, perhaps even more than high temperatures and higher power consumption, is hardware instability. You tamper with a few clocks, maybe dial the voltage up or down a little, and all hell breaks loose. Consider giving OCCT a try if you're looking to test your system's stability. · Stability testing may be a long and arduous process, and monitoring your hardware can help reveal any underlying problems. Even if you're not one who overclocks, l

OCCT With Four Options - How We Stress Test CPUs
August 16, 2020 - OCCT offers a fairly challenging CPU stress test, which often gets overlooked. It might not generate the massive amounts of heat we measure under Prime95 with AVX, but it’s still a great choice for long stability tests. The software can log a number of important parameters, running in an endless loop or stopping after a defined length of time.
