At it’s heart, Opposite of Always is a romantic comedy with a slice of science fiction-ness mixed in. And I loved it for it. Jack is just an average geeky teenager in the last few months of his senior year when he meets Kate, who is just as geeky, during a college visit.

March 31, 2022 - This is another book I read back in 2020, but this one has stuck with me a little bit more than the last. Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds gave me time-travelling Groundhog Day vibes (but with YA stakes) that I’ve enjoyed before—and it didn’t get past me that the characters’ names were Jack and Kate, like in Titanic.

Jack King considers himself an expert in “almost” because he doesn’t succeed at anything he tries. He doesn’t make the sports teams or extracurricular clubs, nor is he good at any of the hobbies he dabbles in.

This time around Jack really puts Kate first in this life and I just think that since he lost Kate the first time around, he was so shocked to see her again that he felt consumed by the need to always be with her. I think Jack feels like he should have spent more time with her and in getting to know her and if he had done that before, he would have known Kate was sick and that he could have helped prevent her death the first time. So I understand why he would spend every waking minute with her, but at the same time, I wanted to take Jack aside and tell him he can’t save everyone. Because he’s so focused on Kate, it’s kind of hard to see how all his healthy, strong relationships with his family and friends diminish.
