You need to apply (request an upgrade). Fidelity won't change this without you asking. Having said that, its not simply a matter of asking. You assets in the account (and total liquid assets) as well as your income are part of Fidelity's review. More on reddit.com

Tier 1 options nightmare
Use your hold stocks and sell covered calls. Sell CSP's to buy those hold stocks. What others are telling you is right.....options is basically the stock markets casino.....house always wins....I use Ford, Coterra, AT&T as my go to covered call stocks....if you get pinned just roll them over to the next week. Question about Level 1 option trading at Fidelity
I'm guessing that when you say "SELL" you mean "SELL to CLOSE" as opposed to "SELL to OPEN"? If so, then level 2 is likely what you want. When you apply, you agree that you understand what it enables, what that means, and what the risks are. https://www.fidelity.com/webcontent/ap002390-mlo-content/20.01/help/learn_trading_options.shtml#levels Level 1 Covered call writing of equity options. Level 2 Level 1, plus purchases of calls and puts (equity, index, currency and interest rate index), writing of cash covered puts, and purchases of straddles or combinations (equity, index, currency and interest rate index). Note that customers who are approved to trade option spreads in retirement accounts are considered approved for level 2. Level 3 Levels 1 and 2, plus spreads, covered put writing (selling puts against stock that is held short) and reverse conversions of equity options. Level 4 Levels 1, 2, and 3, plus uncovered (naked) writing of equity options, uncovered writing of straddles or combinations on equities, and convertible hedging. Level 5 Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4, plus uncovered writing of index options, uncovered writing of straddles or combinations on indexes, covered index options, and collars and conversions of index options. Fidelity Options Tier One
While those strategies you mentioned are used to mitigate risk, it also entails more complexity. If not done correctly, I’d imagine it would enhance your risk. Moreover, you’d need to have a margin account. Taking positions in some of those elements of the strategy can have undefined risks/costs. With lvl1, I think you can basically just do long calls and puts. If I remember correctly those are defined risks — your downside costs are known/limited. More on reddit.com

March 2, 2021 -

I simply want to be able to BUY and SELL options CALLS and PUTS already listed for sale, and simply make money on the premium gain or lose money and never actually exercise the option. Would Level 1 Options trading allow me to simply Buy/Sell options and then make money on the premium rise and sell it before it actually needs to be exercised? Or would i have to apply for level 2 options or 3 or ??

May 14, 2025 -

I have been approved for tier one options trading. I've noticed that the strategies are very limited it seems. To my knowledge I cant do put credit spreads, iron corridors, butterfly etc. I'm confused because to my knowledge these strategies mitigate risks. It makes sense that I cant sell naked options. But why are these less risky strategies not allowed. Let me know if I have any information incorrect. Thank you.

Hey there, u/Neat_Lingonberry7207 , thanks for finding our official sub and making your first post. I'm happy to discuss the options trading tiers with you. Generally speaking, the strategies allowed under tier 1 options approval don't have any margin requirements, and they can be accessed by clients who don't have the margin feature enabled. Option tiers 2 and 3 generally allow for strategies that include short option positions and margin requirements that must be satisfied by a margin-enabled account. Also, the strategies that fall within tiers 2 and 3 involve increased degrees of risk and complexity. Therefore, since not all strategies are suitable for all investors, Fidelity imposes a 3 tiers system, with approval requirements being more rigorous at subsequent tiers. To review, with options tier 1 approval, clients can trade the following strategies: Buy-writes Selling covered calls Rolling covered calls Buying calls/puts Selling cash covered puts Long straddles/strangles You can take a look at the options FAQs linked below to check out the complete list for tiers 2 and 3. FAQs: Options trading Also, in the Options trading section of our Margin FAQs, you can learn more about the margin requirements for various covered and uncovered positions. FAQs: Margin We sincerely appreciate your choosing Fidelity for your brokerage needs. Please let us know if you have any follow-up questions or if you need any other resources. Our team is here to help! Options trading entails significant risk and is not appropriate for all investors. Certain complex options strategies carry additional risk.
