I just wanted to put this out there for other people like me who use cheap tools and don’t have a dust collection system. It’s the Bauer 5” random orbital palm sander. It sucked when it was flinging sawdust EVERYWHERE but after a bit of electrical tape and a 1 1/4” pipe fitting hooked up to my shop vac, ZERO dust escapes. Very satisfied that i no longer have to sand the table i’m working on outside and make the neighbors hate me!

Get the cyclone dust separator from Harbor Freight. Put it on top of a 5 gallon bucket then connect it to your shop vac. Your shop vac filter will last longer. I started with your setup but I fear that my shopvac's choking on dust and heating up fast so I checked out my options and that's what i settled with. I also have a bag for in the vac so the filter only catches the tiniest of particles.

 sneak peek of the table! it’s made from cedar planks. It’s my first big woodworking project and i’m so close to being able to stain it! the colors don’t come across well in the photo but it has some beautiful browns on the left side and red tones on the right. Going for a mountain cabin-y feel.

Kinda the ghetto solution, but my father used to always attach his vac to tools using duct tape. Not pretty, but it worked.

I see some universal adapters on amazon and home depot (http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-3-Piece-Adapter-Kit-VT1755/202077239)........do think this is what I would need to attach the sander to a cheap wet/dry vacuum? ... I think the majority of cheaper shop vacs have a hose that is 1 1/4" in diameter. Regardless, the best way is to check the sizes of the hose that comes on the shop vac and compare it to the port on your sander. I have a shop vac brand that I bought from Lowes a couple of years ago that has 1 1/4" hose on it and I have a harbor freight random orbital sander with a dust bag.
