Oh man, this is my fav topic. If I had known I liked landscape lighting so much as a younger man, I would have started an installation business. Good on you for getting ride of the solar lights. They never produce a great amount or quality of light, and they break... a lot. Light temp - I always go for 2700k. It's a nice, warm light that doesn't hurt your eyes. Also, change to all LED bulbs and you can put a lot more voltage on existing lines and not have to worry about run lengths. Re: turning off the circuit, I always unplug / turn mine off when working on it. Maybe you don't have to, but I always did. Connectors - I too inherited a low voltage system and the connectors were the wire nuts with the goo. Even still, these got loose and was a PITA to find and fix. I switched to these and love them. I'd say it's half-professional (like buying Ridgid tools vs. Milwaukee - it's good enough). I have their uplights all over and they have done great. I also have Westgate lights, and they are fantastic quality so far (3 years). Go to their main site and download a catalog, then do a search for buying online. I used them for my path lights. Volt Lighting: I think they make super high quality fixtures for more $$ than the brands above, but I think they are good. Costco sometimes has their kits too. What I really like is their bulbs - I've ordered a very specific beam angle, voltage, and color from them. IMHO it's expensive for a bulb, but I get exactly what I want. Integrated vs. Non-integrated: I prefer to get non-integrated fixtures, meaning I can switch out the bulbs. I'm particular about the color and intensity, and like to switch and tweaks the bulbs. I got a low voltage system from Home Depot. Also got a Hampton Bay transformer with built in timer so all the lights come on and go off on their own. Running the low voltage cable was very easy to do myself and I have lights along my driveway and spot lights shining on the house (likely what you’re looking for). Unless you have a VERY nice house in an upscale neighborhood, I would NOT recommend spending big bucks on more robust/fancier lighting store light fixtures.
