November 22, 2014 - Type a letter, then go to Symbol, In “Font”, select Arial, and choose “Combining Diacritical Marks” in Subject. Type 0304 for lower case, and 0305 for upper case and insert it. Afterwards, mostly the upper case will not align. The correction is to do “copy/paste”. Copy it (both letter and bar) and paste it as text ( A in Word and 123 in Excel).

February 15, 2019 - Overlining text in Word isn't straightforward, but it isn't impossible either. There are actually at least four ways to do it. You could use the field code, the equation editor, the method of adding a paragraph border, or the individual letters method. The field code method is probably the most technical way to add a bar over text ion word.

Marking one or more words with a continuous line above the characters is sometimes called overstriking, though overstriking generally refers to printing one character on top of an already-printed character.

How to create a character with a bar or line over it in Microsoft Word

In Word, you can insert mathematical symbols into equations or text by using the equation tools.

After you pick Unicode, choose Combining Diacritical Marks to the right. At the bottom, double-click the Combining Overline symbol in row 0300. You should then see the line over the top of your X. Another way to insert an X-bar in Word that works the same on both Windows and Mac is with the Equation Editor.

Answer (1 of 10): For Word 2011 for Mac, not sure of other versions, typing "x\bar" (without quotation marks) puts the bar over the x. As far as I can tell, you can do this for any letter, not just x.

Go to Tools->Autocorrect...->Math autocorrect, ensure that "Use Math AutoCorrect rules outside of math regions" is checked, then in your Word document, type ... Some Unicode letters have a macron version, but not all (x is one of them). You may be able to get macron-x by ... b. from the Mac character viewer, dragging the Combining macron character into the document just after the x. It's Unicode character U+0304. Looking at the result, the macron is not quite central over the letter, so maybe that's what you already tried.
