Hi, visiting Oahu the 4th through the 11th with hubby and mother, and she is really interested in Native singing dancing Etc. She has read about this show at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and while we will ultimately go there if that's what she wants to do, I wonder if there is an equivalent that is more authentic and less of a tourist trap.
Any suggestions about upcoming performances by native Musical artists will be greatly appreciated! I know we are just missing a big Musical Festival, but we were also trying to miss spring break crowds and the internet tells me that there might be pop-up performances from some of the artists during the week while we were there. Any ideas? Thank you!

assuming you're coming march 4-11 since you didnt mention month. Toa Luau at Waimea Valley is often mentioned in this sub as an authentic cultural experience; Waimea Valley where it is located is also a stunning location, and both Waimea Valley and Toa Luau are Native Hawaiian owned and operated. Regarding the PCC: It's certainly less of a tourist trap than somewhere like the Dole Plantation. That being said, it is owned and operated by the Church of Latter Day Saints, and as such the view of Polynesia it presents is somewhat idyllic and whitewashed. In addition to Toa Luau, you may also want to visit Iolani Palace and/or the Bishop Museum for a more balanced view of the history of precolonial Hawaii. Lastly, John Cruz is performing at Blue Note (which is a FANTASTIC venue, our favorite place to see shows on Oahu) on March 7th. He's an award-winnning Hawaiian songwriter and I'd highly encourage you to buy tickets for this if you're interested in local musicians. https://www.bluenotejazz.com/hawaii/tm-event/john-cruz/

International Marketplace does have some boulders to sit on & some rocking chairs on the second floor overlooking the show - those might be claimed early. Otherwise sit on fake grass or stand in the back. Can bring picnic/snacks to eat while you wait for the show or get food nearby after the show. Those hula shows are open air so may get rained on. There might be other free hula shows on Oahu in addition to those. Have fun!
