r/Pennsylvania on Reddit: Notice of PA driving license suspension for unknown citation
July 21, 2025 -

We got an "official notice" from Pennsylvania DoT, Bureau of Driver Licensing, addressed to my wife stating that her driving privilege will be suspended effective at the end of July 2025 for failing to make regular payments on fines, costs, and restitution for a citation (NO LICENSE) that was issued in April 2016! We are 100% confident this citation is either a scam or a clerical error. My wife obtained her driving license toward the end of 2016, and she has never been cited for anything ever. We tried looking up the citation number in the PA Courts' UJS Portal, and it doesn't come up. We searched the site for any citations for my wife's name there are no results found.

The letter goes on to say that we need to contact the traffic court in Pittsburgh and make arrangements with the court to resume payment of the entire balance of $11.50. BTW, we are not from Pittsburgh. It also instructs my wife to comply with the suspension by returning her license to our local DMV with a completed DL-16LC.

Is this letter even legit? All details of my wire, her name, driver's license number, DOB, address etc., are correct. Also, how could my wife have been renewing her license for the past decade when something like this would be outstanding? We've also never received any correspondence regarding this "citation" for the past 9 years.

Edit: We just pulled my wife's driving record, and we see a violation from 2016 for a commercial vehicle. What the heck, she hardly drives anywhere, even in a small car, let alone a commercial vehicle! What does this mean? We see this one item in her record, and we weren't anywhere near Pittsburgh on that day in 2016:

REPORT OF VIOLATIONS AND DEPARTMENTAL ACTIONS

VIOLATION: VEHICLE CODE:1533D
DESCRIPTION: FAIL TO RESPOND
COMM VEHICLE: NO HAZMAT: NO CDL HOLDER: NO

Edit 2: Please ignore the note about "commercial vehicle" from the first edit. It says COMM VEHICLE: NO. Will check with the court / PennDOT on Monday.

Edit 3 (Mon, Jul 21):

  1. Called the Pittsburgh court this morning. They confirmed that the citation number was linked to my wife in error and wanted us to contact PennDOT to get it corrected. They would not be able to provide any details about the citation itself to us because it is someone else's information, as suspected.

  2. Spoke to PennDOT, and they said we would need to get a letter from the court asap with the acknowledgement of error, and they can take care of this after we forward the letter to their email. They requested that we press this matter with the court before my wife's license suspension goes into effect in a week.

  3. Called the court again to request the letter, but the lady said she would have to talk to her supervisor and get us that letter tomorrow (he's not in today) as it's a special/ad-hoc letter. They will also be calling my wife's number with updates tomorrow.

Edit 4: We called our state representative a couple of hours ago and explained the situation. We also emailed them copies of the license suspension notice and the restoration letter we received from PennDOT, as well as the contact details of the staff we spoke to at the court/PennDOT. We're happy to say that the PennDOT Court Services person we had spoken to earlier called my wife back 15 mins ago and mentioned that they looked at the details of the case again and the situation has now been resolved, and my wife doesn't have to do anything else from her side! They'll also be sending her a letter confirming this. Thank you all for helping us navigate this situation! Hopefully, this will be the last edit.
