November 10, 2016Can't use Prolific USB to Serial dongles under Win8/8.1/10? Try the drivers here! (more info in comments)
Some of the older USB to Serial dongles (ie: ones based on the EOL PL-2303 XA/HXA series chip) won't work correctly on anything later then Windows 7.
You can use one of the older driver packs located at the above link, and follow the instructions, and the older dongle should start to work again.
There is also a set of instructions here which work equally as well.
This bit me pretty hard on my Win10 desktop at work, so I figured I'd share what I've learned and found to work!

One thing I found was that the reboot at the end of that section was not optional. If I didn't reboot, then the next time I plugged in my usb-to-serial cable, it fell back to the newer (non-functional) version of the driver.
