What do you print?  A Laser printer will have some limitations but also some advantages over ink models. Primary advantages:  Speed and Toner never dries up Primary limitations: Borderless printing is all but unheard of in laser systems.  Label media is generally more limited due to the heat involved.  Photo prints never really exceed magazine quality.  Power consumption while printing is substantially higher. Since print quality is a major factor, forget that third party supplies exist for any manufacturer.  You get exactly what you pay for with them, cheap but not top quality.  Budget for OEM and you'll be far happier long term.  As a home user you likely won't buy them often since they print thousands of normal pages so when you figure price per page they're a lot less scary.  This is one case where savings look good but aren't. I know everyone here hates HP, but Costco does have one of their Color LaserJet models too, it's substantially smaller than the Brother model and will save you $200.  The hate is mostly due to ink models and third party supplies, which you really don't want if you value quality anyway. It's decent but the thing with ink jet printers is that you have to use them, otherwise the printhead will clog and that costs as much as a new printer to repair. More on reddit.com

If you're doing intermittent printing with lots of delay in between I'd STRONGLY encourage you to go the laser route. Toner doesn't dry up when it's not used.
