Hey there!
Soon starting my second year studying computer science, really liked the first year, especially the programming classes (Python, Java), learning some C++ and Rust the coming year :)
We got recommended to start working on our Linkedin profiles during year 2, and I'm thinking it's time to get rid of the "ponygirl2005"-sounding address I've had since I was a kid and get one I can use in a professional setting.
I like gmail and plan to use it, but my name is already taken. I've looked around here on Reddit and picked up some tips, but I'm having a hard time deciding on what would be the best both for private use and not look out of place in a professional setting.
The tips I've seen on Reddit are:
Add your middle name initial or birth year to the address. "jane.j.doe" is already taken, same with "jane.doe.05" and "jane.doe.2005". "jane.j.doe.2005" is free, but is that a bit "much"? I get the feeling it might not look professional?
An alternative to the suggestion above would be the complete middle name, but my middle name is a bit long, and my first name isn't really a short "jane", would be more along the lines jeanette.josephine.doe, maybe a bit long?
Adding something with the line of work to the address. How about adding "dev", or something similar? "jeanette.doe.dev"? Does this sound good or silly? Also thinking - what if I get into business intelligence/data warehousing, would a "dev" be out of place then?
Using protonmail instead of gmail. This came up several times in other discussions. There the first few suggestions are available.
tl;dr - best professional email for a future dev in your opinion?
jeanette.j.doe.2005@gmail - "messy"?
jeanette.josephine.doe@gmail - long?
jeanette.doe.dev@gmail - is "dev" good? What if I end up in BI/data warehousing, still good?
jeanette.j.doe@protonmail - is Protonmail a good alternative with a professional vibe?
jeanette.doe.05@protonmail -same as above
Any other suggestions? Thanks :)
I have a professional email that is something like [email protected]. Apparently, numbers in email addresses are seen as unprofessional and even gets marked for spam, but then some sources say that it's fine as long as it's not innapropriate. It is very frustrating trying to make an email address with variations of your names without using a number. Is it really bad to have numbers in your professional email address?
I am thinking of changing my email address because it no longer looks professional. My current email address is "[email protected]". What do you think contributes to a professional email address? Should I create my own domain for my email address or use a popular source like Gmail?
All comments and recommendations are appreciated!
Hey guys, I recently graduated and am looking for a job. The email I'm using right now sounds unprofessional, made it as a kid. I'm having trouble thinking of ideas that include my name, but it's pretty common (both first and last name) and everything I can think of is taken.
Edit: Common combos I've tried are variations of my first name/initial, last name/initial, and physical location.
And do you think simply [first name][last name][some random numbers] sound too boring?
[email protected]
While having a memorable email is nice to have, nobody in the hiring process cares what your email is so long as it’s benign and not childish - everyone copy/pastes anyway 99 times out of 100. Spend 5 minutes and find something suitable and move on to more value-added items.
I’ve been working in IT for a few years but am looking for a new job and want a more professional email. My current one has my birth year and everything I’ve read says that can be a red flag for employers. I’ve tried creating a new one using every variation of first, middle, and last name. I’ve used periods and various orientations of initials. I was able to find a few that were accepted.
(First name.middle name. Last name)
(First initial. Middle name, last name)
(First name,middle initial,last name.tech)
I’m just worried that those would be too long. Would any of those work well for a professional email. If not, do you have suggestions?
I also wonder if I might have better luck with a different email platform. Aside from Gmail, is there a different one I could use that wouldn’t throw up red flags to employers?
Edit: Oh my god, the response to this is truly incredible and I really appreciate all the advice. I’m still going through the comments but a common piece of advice is to get a domain. This is good advice and something I should certainly do at some point, especially working in IT. But a big part of the reason I’m looking for a new job is that money is extremely tight. I know it would only be like $20/year but we’re trying to avoid any extra spending, no matter how minor. For right now, purchasing a domain would probably be more of a last resort.
Hi, my name is fairly common in the UK, and I’m looking for advice on how to get a clean, professional looking email address. Ideally, it would work with Gmail, as that’s where I manage my other accounts.
I’m open to using a small email provider or setting up a custom domain as long as it looks conventional without any numbers, like [email protected] or [email protected]. I recently secured lastname.am, but the less common TLD makes it look a bit weird and scammy.
If anyone knows of small email providers where my name might still be available or has suggestions for other ideas, I’d love to hear them please. I do have a budget of around £150/$185 but flexible and I’m willing to pay for google workspace.
Thanks!
I am wondering if I should I use a personal email address(e.g Rocky567@gmail com) or a professional one (e.g firstnamelastname@gmail .com) for signing in sites such as roadmap.sh and leetcode to build my career.
I am leaning on a personal email address and have my profile link to my professional one.
Any advice is welcome.
Hello,
I’m going to start applying for jobs soon. I need a professional email address, however, I have a double-barreled surname so I’m not sure how best to create the account.
Assume the name is ‘John Doe-Smith’ how would you do it. Would like a few examples if possible, thank you!
I am firmly determined on using Gmail, but the name is common and all name and number combinations with one or two digits are taken.
[email protected] is the only form that is unique and not taken, but it sounds excessively egotistical in my opinion. Will it come across that way if I use it for professional purposes?
I am not interested in purchasing a domain either.
Hopefully this has found the right group
I’m a full time musician. One of my band mates has asked to become more involved in the business side of things and the first thing he’s done is create a gmail account because he believes our current outlook address is outdated and unprofessional. He insists that @outlook will lose us business and make us look amateur.
Our entire contact history for the last 5 years has been through outlook and there’s never been a problem
Is there any base to these claims?
Any insight is appreciated
I run a personal consulting firm and am starting to get some more clients where I would like an email address. Let's say the company name is XYZ and my name is John. I would like to get an email address something like [email protected].
I also would like to created a website XYZ.com, but that is second priority to the email address.
I’m wondering if this is a complete amateur question but is a gmail.com email address ok to use for as a first time self publishing author?
It’s just my full name with no silly extras but for correspondence with editors etc is it worth paying the monthly subscription to get a domain email?
Then I’m thinking about for mailing lists is it worth it?
I’d rather not the extra monthly expense if it’s not something people generally notice/care about but I don’t want to appear unprofessional.
Thanks :)
Hi,
I have had my current firstname.lastname email address since early high school and I'll be graduating university in about two years. At one point, I decided to make a second email address because I felt like that first one was getting too busy as I was defaulting to it for Everything (spam, subscriptions, university and internship applications, etc.) but I never ended up using it often because it was just firstname.lastname2 and I have a short but uncommon last name anyways so it felt a little tedious to be spelling everything out AND telling people to remember the 2 at the end of my email. I also started to feel like it was a little unprofessional to have just lazily added a 2 at the end but that might just be my opinion.
In university, instead of doing the same first.last thing, I made my email address as firstnamelast (like johnsm at university.edu) and I have really liked it much more. I have been using this email for graduate school inquiries, correspondences in academia, internship applications, etc. However, I won't be able to use this university email address after I graduate I'm pretty sure, so I am trying to decide between still using the original and overused firstname.lastname address or just making a new one of firstnamelast or something else thats simple and short. In total, I have actually had around five email addresses my entire life. Two of them are professional and the other three are unprofessional (without my name, just random words) have been more spam/subscription stuff. I still have access to all of these accounts, but I use my university email address the most because it's the one that I have actual serious business in and the rest haven't really had a serious piece of mail since I started university.
Would it be too much to make myself a new professional email address for my post-grad era or should I continue with the firstname.lastname even though there are way too many subcriptions and spam and promotions clouding my inbox? If I do make a new email, I will absolutely NOT use it for any promotional materials and really try to keep it strictly business.
You know you can just go into all of those subscriptions and remove them or change them to send to a personal email. I have a firstnameinitiallastname@gmail just for accounts and subscriptions that I know I’ll almost never need to read the emails for. No sense in stressing out having multiple professional emails.
buy a domain and stand out, my professional email is [email protected]
I need a new email address as the one I have, while it is professional with my name, is kinda long at 27 characters. Plus it's with Outlook and I want to switch to Gmail. However it seems all the combinations for my name is taken. Without adding in numbers as I'd like to avoid that. I've tried first initial middle initial last name. First name last name. First name middle initial last name. First name middle initial last initial. First name middle name last name. Can't think of anything else to do. What suggestions do you have?
I have a website with SquareSpace and I’m signed up for the Basic plan at almost $200/year. Domain name was purchased with SquareSpace. In order to have Mailerlite integration, I have to upgrade my website to the Core plan, which will bring it up to about $270/year. Okay, fine, I’ve accepted that.
Now it seems to be HEAVILY recommended that I get a custom email address (ex. [email protected]) for deliverability purposes. With Google Workspace, which is what SquareSpace recommends, that is ANOTHER $86/year minimum. For pretty much nothing. Mailerlite is my EMS and SquareSpace is providing hosting and website building services, but $86/year for simply my own name that I already paid for as an email address is something I don’t want to pay for. That’s something that should have already been included in one of the other services I’m paying for.
My point isn’t to come here and vent, though. Rather, I would like to know if there are any other services in which I could create a custom email address using my SquareSpace domain and use with Mailerlite for either cheap or completely free. Again, not to sound cheap, but that $86/year isn’t even for any actual services; Mailerlite is my EMS. I would just like to have an email address that isn’t a gmail account.
For context, I have a month-old website. It’s an author website, though I still haven’t published any books yet. Waiting on my book cover commission.
Tl;dr I would like any recommendations for a provider of cheap custom email addresses in which I could use my existing SquareSpace domain as the email domain.
Hello everyone! I 'm looking for some advice on professional email format while keeping privacy in mind. Do you recommend using your real first and last name? Obviously, you don't want to use the "[email protected]" !
Here are some of the common formats. Is there a specific one that is recommended?
first [email protected]
Thanks!
I've never been a fan of a period (.) Or underscore(_) in an email. Too hard to miss if someone is copying down you email by hand. The underscore is sometimes invisible on lined paper. But that is just me
I'd say [email protected]
Like that they don't know your genre until you write your email with your signature.
I just lost my job and I want to make a more professional email account. I read it was bad to use numbers for the email. So I used Proton for the email. Now my SO is freaking out saying no one is going to email me back because they don’t know what proton is. Would an interviewer not call you if had a Proton email?
